A Middlesbrough social club has raised nearly \u00a329,000 to support patients being treated for cancer at The James Cook University Hospital<\/a>. Staff and members at Beechwood<\/a>, Easterside<\/a> and District Social Club have been supporting the hospital for more than 50 years.<\/p>\n Its latest venture saw the club raise \u00a328,855.50 over the course of a year for the hospital\u2019s radiotherapy unit \u2013 where 68-year-old entertainment manager Harry Dunn has recently received treatment for prostate cancer. But Harry\u2019s not the only person at the club who has received prostate cancer care at James Cook.<\/p>\n A number of staff and members of the club have also been affected, including 61- year-old secretary Mick Smith. Harry and Mick, both from Middlesbrough<\/a>, recently visited the hospital\u2019s radiotherapy unit on the club\u2019s behalf to make their generous donation.<\/p>\n It has allowed the unit to purchase a fourth bladder scanner \u2013 which assesses the amount of fluid in patients\u2019 bladders as they prepare for radiotherapy treatment.<\/p>\n Mick Smith (left) and Harry Dunn (right)(Image: University Hospitals Tees)<\/p>\n Harry said: \u201cEveryone\u2019s affected by cancer and there\u2019s been loads of lads at the club who have or have had prostate cancer. If you haven\u2019t had it yourself, you know someone who has. Harry and I just want to say a big thank you to all our members and the committee. We couldn\u2019t do this without them.\u201d<\/p>\n Mick continued: \u201cAs soon as you mention James Cook, our members all want to get involved because they\u2019ve all used it. Harry will organise a show for a charity night and it sells out straight away. Clubs like this one aren\u2019t just about having a drink. It\u2019s a community and we couldn\u2019t support charities like we do without our members.\u201d<\/p>\n Mick and Harry make their donation to the radiotherapy team at The James Cook University Hospital(Image: University Hospitals Tees)<\/p>\n The social club, which is located just over the road from the hospital, was awarded \u2018Charity Club of the Year\u2019 at Club Mirror\u2019s 2025 Club Awards. The staff have run a number of charity events over the last 12 months for their latest cause \u2013 and members have been keen to get involved as well, taking on charity cycles, walks and more.<\/p>\n Claire Huntley, radiotherapy services manager at University Hospitals Tees, said: \u201cWe are incredibly grateful to Mick, Harry and everyone at Beechwood, Easterside and District Social Club for their continuous support of James Cook.<\/p>\n \u201cTheir latest donation means we\u2019ve been able to purchase a fourth bladder scanner, meaning less waiting time for patients who are coming to us for treatment.
