The White Lotus has gotten a major update ahead of its highly-anticipated fourth season, with Helena Bonham Carter leaving the series just as production got under way in France earlier this month.

The actor, who won a BAFTA Award for her performance in The King’s Speech, was unveiled in the second batch of casting announcements back in January, but it has now been confirmed that she has departed Mike White’s comedy-drama.

A spokesperson for HBO shared a statement via Deadline, which reads: “With filming just under way on season four of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set.

“The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks. HBO, the producers and Mike are saddened that they won’t get to work with her, but [they] remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.”

Carter was cast alongside Steve Coogan, Caleb Jonte Edwards, Chris Messina, and Marissa Long in January, with Alexander Ludwig and AJ Michalka being in the first announcement the previous month.

Since then, other figures to have joined the anthology series include Sandra Bernhard, Ari Graynor, Dylan Ennis, Vincent Cassel, Max Greenfield, Kumail Nanjiani, Chloe Bennet, Charlie Hall, Jarrad Paul and Heather Graham amongst others.

The development comes just as production got under way in France, with filming taking place in St Tropez, Monaco and Paris. The story, meanwhile, is set in the French Riviera during the Cannes Film Festival, and has a slight twist to the formula.

In the first three seasons, which were set in Hawaii, Sicily and Thailand respectively, the action predominantly took place in one resort in the titular hotel chain. The fourth season, however, will see the story being split between two hotels for the very first time.

“The fourth season will follow a new group of White Lotus hotel guests and employees over the span of a week, taking place during the Cannes Film Festival,” reads the synopsis for the eagerly-awaited season.

The White Lotus airs on Sky Atlantic in the UK and streams on HBO Max.
