\n The showcase includes early and lesser-known pieces by the internationally acclaimed painter, many of which have never been publicly displayed before.\n<\/p>\n
\n Running until September 19, the exhibition is part of the Royal Scottish Academy\u2019s (RSA) RSA200: Celebrating Together project, marking the organisation\u2019s 200th anniversary.\n<\/p>\n
\n The exhibition has been curated by his widow Helen Bellany and Alexander Moffat RSA.\n<\/p>\n
\n Kate Maynard, team manager for museums at East Lothian Council, said: “We are incredibly proud to host this landmark exhibition at the John Gray Centre.\n<\/p>\n
\n “John Bellany is one of East Lothian\u2019s most celebrated sons and his influence on Scottish art is immeasurable.\n<\/p>\n
\n “This exhibition not only honours his legacy but strengthens the vital connection between our local communities and the internationally significant art created here.”\n<\/p>\n
\n Born in Port Seton in 1942, John Bellany HRSA\u00a0(Honorary Member of the Royal Scottish Academy)\u00a0became a leading figure in 20th-century Scottish art.\n<\/p>\n
\n He was known for bold, emotionally charged works often inspired by the fishing communities of Scotland\u2019s east coast.\n<\/p>\n
\n Although he worked in various locations across the UK and Europe, eventually settling in Tuscany, his connection to East Lothian remained strong throughout his life.\n<\/p>\n
\n The exhibition features works from the Bellany estate, the private collection of Alexander Moffat RSA, East Lothian Council Museums Service, and major loans from the Royal Scottish Academy.\n<\/p>\n
\n Many of the items on display are being shown to the public for the first time.\n<\/p>\n
\n Mr Moffat said: “No matter where he travelled in the world, John Bellany never forgot his upbringing in Port Seton and the East Lothian seascapes that inspired so much of his work.\n<\/p>\n
\n “I\u2019m sure he would have regarded the exhibition in the John Gray Centre as a very special homecoming.”\n<\/p>\n
\n Bellany\u2019s art is held in more than 50 public collections worldwide.\n<\/p>\n
\n His accolades include a CBE in 1994 and election to the Royal Academy in 1991.\n<\/p>\n
\n In 2005, he was named the first Freeman of East Lothian.\n<\/p>\n
\n The exhibition highlights Bellany\u2019s signature use of symbolism, emotional depth and exploration of human vulnerability.\n<\/p>\n
\n It also emphasises his ability to merge personal experience with the collective identity of his home town and the wider coastal communities of Scotland.\n<\/p>\n
\n Visitors can view the exhibition on Thursdays and Fridays from 10am to 1pm and 2-5pm, and on Saturdays from 10am to 1pm and 1.30-4pm. Admission is free.\n<\/p>\n

\n “It is most fitting that the life and art of John Bellany HRSA, one of Scotland\u2019s very best painters of the late 20th century and one of East Lothian\u2019s most famous artist sons, is celebrated at the John Gray Centre in an exhibition curated by Helen Bellany and another Academician and lifelong friend of Bellany\u2019s, Alexander Moffat RSA.\n<\/p>\n
\n “Art can bring people, communities and stories together, and Bellany\u2019s upbringing in Port Seton and the local subjects he favoured connect him intimately to the life and stories of East Lothian.\n<\/p>\n
\n “Through RSA200 and beyond, the RSA is delighted to support local venues like the John Gray Centre bring the best art to wider audiences across Scotland.”\n<\/p>\n
\n As part of the exhibition, the John Gray Centre will host a series of talks and special events.\n<\/p>\n
