A terminal cancer patient from Sussex who requested
\nemergency care for her mother said she began to lose hope of ever receiving
\nhelp.<\/p>\n
Becks Vernum Holder cared for her mother, Sandy, who has
\ndementia, for five years. In September, Becks was given a year to live. The
\nfamily contacted the local authority for help.<\/p>\n
It would be six weeks before Sandy eventually moved into a
\ncare home. <\/p>\n
“I was beginning to panic,\u201d Becks said. \u201cIt was
\nstressful, not knowing if it was ever going to happen.” <\/p>\n
West Sussex County Council said it “prioritised”
\nSandy’s case and once it was assessed, residential care was found “as the
\nappropriate outcome”.<\/p>\n
The charity Beehive, which runs Cornwell House care home in
\nFerring, agreed to care for Sandy for roughly half its usual cost. <\/p>\n
Lynsey Tran, head of dementia services at Beehive, said many
\npeople have not taken the first step in asking for care \u201cbecause they’re so
\nscared they’re going to be told ‘no’, they don’t see the point”.<\/p>\n
