The Jurassic Park<\/a> alum, 78, was diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, <\/a>a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, in 2022. He\u2019s been open about his treatment, writing in his 2023 memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, that he was taking a \u201cbrutal\u201d form of chemotherapy every month.<\/p>\n During a new interview with Australia\u2019s 7News, Neill reflected on the challenges of living with the disease for so many years. <\/p>\n \u201cI was on chemotherapy and the pretty miserable business but it was keeping me alive,\u201d he said. <\/a>\u201cThen the chemo stopped working. I was at a loss and it looked like I was on the way out, which wasn\u2019t ideal, obviously.\u201d <\/p>\n However, his condition started to change after he discovered CAR T-cell therapy, which 7News said is a treatment that \u201cgenetically modifies patients\u2019 blood cells\u201d and is only being used in clinical trials in Australia. <\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve had a scan just now, and there is no cancer in my body. This is an extraordinary thing,\u201d Neill revealed. <\/p>\n Hematologist Miles Prince shared more details about the treatment<\/a>, explaining: \u201c[We] turbocharge those cells to then be able to now recognize the myeloma, which was not visible to the immune system before and then jump on it and kill it.\u201d<\/p>\n Neill continued to applaud the CAR T-cell therapy before sharing what could be next for his career. \u201cIt\u2019s science at its best,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s time I did another movie.\u201d <\/p>\n Neil starred in the period drama The Piano, which won best original screenplay at the Oscars in 1993. Prior to that, Neill was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in the Eighties series Reilly, Ace Of Spies. <\/p>\n He was nominated for an Emmy Award for the titular wizard in the 1998 mini-series, Merlin, featuring Helena Bonham Carter and the late James Earl Jones, and later portrayed Major Chester Campbell in the 2013 BBC crime drama Peaky Blinders, alongside Cillian Murphy.<\/p>\n The actor has previously spoken about the ups and downs of his cancer treatment. During a conversation with Kate Thornton, for a 2024 episode of her White Wine Question Time podcast<\/a>, he said he was \u201chard at work and enjoying life immensely,\u201d after he took a short break from acting. <\/a> <\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m in remission,\u201d the Event Horizon and Possession star said. \u201cI\u2019m very grateful for not just the wonderful care I\u2019ve had from doctors and nurses and so on, but also the strides that have been made in treating these things in the last few years.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIf this had happened to me 20 years ago, I wouldn\u2019t be around to talk to you. I go in [for treatment] once a month now,\u201d he added. \u201cBut it used to be three times a month and it\u2019s down to once a month now.
