\n\tA revival of \u201cEvita,\u201d starring Rachel Zegler<\/a> as the Argentinian first lady Eva Per\u00f3n, is transferring to Broadway<\/a> in the spring of 2027. <\/p>\n

\n\tDirector Jamie Lloyd\u2019s new take on the musical, written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, was a massive hit last year in London. The production will play at a Shubert theater to be announced. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPerforming\u202fTim\u202fRice\u202fand Andrew\u202fLloyd Webber\u2019s brilliant show\u202fin London was a dream come true, but being able to\u202fpartner once again with Jamie to\u202fbring \u2018Evita\u2019 to\u202f Broadway\u202fis a once in a lifetime opportunity,\u201d Zegler said in a statement. \u201cI can\u2019t wait\u202fto perform for my home, New York City.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tZegler won an Olivier Award for her performance. The musical chronicles the life and times of Per\u00f3n, including her origins, rise to fame, political career and untimely death. \u201cEvita,\u201d which counts \u201cDon\u2019t Cry for Me, Argentina\u201d as one of its most famous songs, began as a rock opera concept album. It originally debuted in London\u2019s West End in 1978 starring Elaine Paige, and transferred to Broadway in 1979 led by Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin. \u201cEvita\u201d has been revived several times on Broadway and the West End over the years and was adapted into a 1996 film starring Madonna.<\/p>\n

\n\tLloyd is making one major change from the West End production. In London, Zegler sang \u201cDon\u2019t Cry for Me, Argentina\u201d outside, from the balcony of the theater<\/a>, which was then projected on a screen inside the venue for ticket buyers. Though divisive, the scene was symbolic. Variety\u2019s London-based editor Ellise Shafer wrote that \u201chaving Zegler perform the show\u2019s biggest moment to a crowd of people on the street \u2014 as Per\u00f3n would have in real-life \u2014 returns the power to the people, as she sought to, and reminds us that the art form itself is a privilege.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tLloyd Webber believes the feat is riskier in the Big Apple because of gun violence in the United States. \u201cThe one thing that absolutely cannot happen is what we did in London on the balcony,\u201d the legendary composer told USA Today<\/a>. \u201cWe can\u2019t do that in New York. I mean, something awful could happen. We have gun laws in Britain.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLloyd teased he\u2019ll be trying something different for Manhattan crowds. \u201cWhen we started discussing\u00a0a\u00a0New York production,\u00a0it became apparent that\u00a0our\u00a0Palladium staging of \u2018Don\u2019t Cry\u00a0for\u00a0Me Argentina\u2019 would not\u00a0be possible,\u201d Lloyd said.\u00a0\u201cI am really excited to explore a new idea, made especially for Broadway.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLloyd, whose recent Broadway revival of \u201cSunset Boulevard\u201d took the actor Tom Francis outside the theater and through Shubert Alley\u00a0each night, added: \u201cI was completely overwhelmed by the\u00a0incredible response to\u00a0\u2018Evita\u2019\u00a0in London.\u00a0It is an honor to work with Tim and Andrew, and I\u2019m looking forward\u00a0to revisiting\u00a0the production with Rachel,\u00a0whose stellar\u00a0performance\u00a0continues to inspire me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tRice called Lloyd\u2019s vision \u201cbold and inventive\u201d and praised Zegler as \u201cmagnetic.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tLloyd Webber said the production is \u201cextraordinary,\u201d adding that \u201cit is so exciting to see Tim and my work reimagined in new ways, and the show has a generational talent in Rachel Zegler.
