Mirra Andreeva<\/a>\u2019s quarter-final match against Leylah Fernandez was brought to a halt with Andreeva serving at 3-4 in the second set when the umpire noticed that someone had \u201cfallen\u201d in the stands, and called medics to the court. No. 9 seed Andreeva had just come back from a break down and went 15-0 up on her serve when the chair official stopped play.<\/p>\n Andreeva looked over as fans in the stands started whistling to alert officials to the issue. \u201cWe have a situation in the stands, a person fell down, maybe some medical condition there. We have a situation in the stands with a spectator. I think they fell down,\u201d the umpire said over his walkie-talkie.<\/p>\n \u201cSomeone needing some medical attention in the stands, so there will be a slight delay here. May well be that the umpire calls the players back to the chairs,\u201d commentator Jonathan Overend told viewers on Sky Sports. \u201cWell noticed by the umpire,\u201d Naomi Broady added.<\/p>\n Andreeva and Fernandez both waited at the baseline, and the Canadian started shadow swinging to stay warm while the umpire looked to the stands, waiting for medics to arrive.<\/p>\n \u201cIf they\u2019re not going to play, the umpire might as well invite the players back to the chair. I think, because it\u2019s very important, obviously, that this spectator is seen to and that medical attention is given if required,\u201d Overend said on commentary while the umpire turned to ask what was happening.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m surprised the players haven\u2019t been told to sit down if it\u2019s going to be an unknown wait time,\u201d Broady agreed. Officials could be heard speaking to the umpire over his walkie-talkie, confirming that medics and doctors were on the way.<\/p>\n The chair umpire called medics to the stands after a person ‘fell’ during Andreeva vs Fernandez (Image: Sky Sports)<\/p>\n Andreeva\u2019s team got on their feet, looking over with concern as both players continued waiting at the baseline. \u201cIt does feel like the medical attention has not yet arrived,\u201d Overend said as the delay continued.<\/p>\n Both players started walking towards the umpire\u2019s chair for an update, and a supervisor also took to the court. \u201cWe are pausing just to see if everything is right. We pause the match, so if you want, you can talk to the coach,\u201d umpire Nikola Srecec told them. \u201cThey\u2019re going to check on if she\u2019s okay or not, and then they\u2019ll see. Should be quick now.\u201d<\/p>\n The match eventually resumed a few minutes later, and Andreeva successfully served to level the score at 4-4, winning three games in a row. The Russian was unable to convert four break points on Fernandez\u2019s serve at 5-5, and then had to save three set points to force a tiebreak.<\/p>\n But she got it done in the breaker, winning the 68-minute set 7-6(1), and then won the second set 6-3 to move into her first Madrid semi-final.<\/p>\n EXPRESS SPORT ON FB!
