{"id":559952,"date":"2026-05-01T04:46:19","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T04:46:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/559952\/"},"modified":"2026-05-01T04:46:19","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T04:46:19","slug":"archbishop-calls-on-carney-to-stop-extension-of-maid-for-mental-illness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/559952\/","title":{"rendered":"Archbishop calls on Carney to stop extension of MAID for mental illness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Archbishop of Toronto is appealing to Prime Minister Mark Carney\u2019s Catholic faith and urging him to \u201cchoose life and not death\u201d when it comes to the planned extension of <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/assisted-dying\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">assisted dying<\/a> eligibility.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In a letter dated April 20, Archbishop Frank Leo expressed support for a Conservative private member\u2019s bill that would prevent access to medical assistance in dying from being extended to people whose sole underlying medical condition is a mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>That change is set to take effect in March 2027. A special joint parliamentary committee of MPs and senators is currently studying whether Canada is ready for that to happen.<\/p>\n<p>Leo urged the prime minister to allow Liberal members of Parliament to vote freely on the private member\u2019s bill to restrict MAID.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also urge you and the minister of justice to consider measures that restrict further expansion of assisted suicide in our country and instead prioritize investments in palliative care, mental health support and resources for those who are increasingly marginalized and isolated,\u201d Leo wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The archbishop\u2019s office said it has not received a reply from the prime minister. A similar letter was sent to all MPs in the archdiocese.<\/p>\n<p>Carney\u2019s office refused to answer any questions about the letter or his government\u2019s plans for assisted dying.<\/p>\n<p>Health Minister Marjorie Michel would not say whether she believes the country will be ready for the planned extension.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview on Thursday, she said she and Justice Minister Sean Fraser are waiting for the committee\u2019s report, which is expected sometime in June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a big decision. Is there a good or bad decision? The government delayed the extension until 2027 to give provincial health systems and health care workers time to prepare.<\/p>\n<p>One of the witnesses at Tuesday evening\u2019s meeting of the special joint parliamentary committee was Brian Mishara, director of the centre for research and intervention on suicide, ethical issues and end-of-life practices at Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al and a former president of the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Canada<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that MAID should be available when suffering is not remediable by other means,\u201d he told the committee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, in the case of mental illness, this is not possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>That concern has been echoed by several other witnesses and medical professionals during the committee study.<\/p>\n<p>But more than one witness has also suggested that the committee <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11813974\/maid-assisted-dying-committee-bias-expert\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">appears to be deliberately calling witnesses who will argue against the extension.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Health Matters: Federal health minister to launch MAID consultations'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/HEALTH_OCT_29.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2:14<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHealth Matters: Federal health minister to launch MAID consultations\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Jocelyn Downie, a professor emeritus of law at Dalhousie University who has studied assisted dying for decades, said she was alarmed to see the committee call nearly twice as many witnesses who were opposed to the expansion than those who supported it.<\/p>\n<p>She also noted it has not heard from people with lived experience with mental illness who are currently ineligible to seek an assisted death.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Psychiatric Association, which has drafted clinical guidelines for assessing patients for MAID, has written a letter to the committee offering to appear and refuting what it says are false statements made in past meetings.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Later in Tuesday\u2019s meeting, Sen.
