{"id":560341,"date":"2026-05-01T10:16:16","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T10:16:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/560341\/"},"modified":"2026-05-01T10:16:16","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T10:16:16","slug":"wakefield-trinity-boss-offers-tom-johnstone-injury-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/560341\/","title":{"rendered":"Wakefield Trinity boss offers Tom Johnstone injury update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wakefield Trinity head coach Daryl Powell has eased any long-term concerns over the fitness of star winger Tom Johnstone, insisting his injury issue is more of a precautionary measure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Johnstone has already missed a decent chunk of the 2026 campaign after undergoing surgery on a knee issue during the off-season, but has since made a strong return to the field with seven tries in his six outings this season.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Johnstone injury update issued as Powell eases long-term concerns<\/p>\n<p>Given his injury history, both this season and across his career, there were fears that it could be a lengthy absence; however, Powell has quickly downplayed any long-term concerns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe just had a jab in the ankle area that will hopefully settle down a little problem he\u2019s been having,\u201d said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loverugbyleague.com\/club\/wakefield-trinity\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trinity<\/a> boss. \u201cHe\u2019s been having a couple of problems with his knee and ankle, but it\u2019s nothing major.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to make sure he\u2019s right; we don\u2019t want to put him out there and then it extends to something more serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Want more Love Rugby League? Add us as a <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/preferences\/source?q=loverugbyleague.com\" target=\"_blank\">preferred source on Google<\/a> and ensure you never miss our exclusives and breaking news!<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, Max Jowitt is also in a similar position regarding an Achilles issue which has kept him out since their Challenge Cup defeat to Wigan Warriors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the same with Max (Jowitt), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loverugbyleague.com\/tag\/daryl-powell\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Powell<\/a> added. \u201cHe\u2019s got a bit of an Achilles problem that\u2019s causing him trouble and is proving difficult to clear up at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no hoodwinking, really, but we\u2019ve got a couple of boys who have a few bits that are keeping them out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Powell is confident both men will be able to return to action following the Challenge Cup break next weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think everybody should be pretty much available after that (Challenge Cup break),\u201d he said. \u201cUnfortunately, we\u2019ve had a couple of tough games on the spin with some of our top players missing, but that\u2019s the season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>England international Johnstone was also among three changes to Wakefield\u2019s extended 21-man squad for this weekend\u2019s clash with Leeds Rhinos, alongside Seth Nikotemo and Ellis Lingard, but Powell admitted he won\u2019t make too many unenforced changes to his match-day 17 for Friday night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot too much (change), I don\u2019t think,\u201d he said. \u201cSeth (Nikotemo) got knocked out last week, he\u2019s going through concussion protocols so he\u2019s out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a few players missing this week, and it\u2019ll be a tough challenge against a team that has everyone fit, and they\u2019re the team of the competition at the moment.
