{"id":56076,"date":"2025-08-10T01:09:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-10T01:09:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/56076\/"},"modified":"2025-08-10T01:09:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-10T01:09:14","slug":"the-15-nhs-hospitals-where-game-changing-cancer-vaccines-will-be-rolled-out-first","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/56076\/","title":{"rendered":"The 15 NHS hospitals where game-changing cancer vaccines will be rolled out first"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tDespite advances in care for patients with head and neck cancer, the advanced form of the disease is difficult to treat and has high rates of recurrence\t\t\t\t\t                <\/p>\n<p>        <a href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/author\/tom-bawden\" title=\"Tom Bawden\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/SEI_115893987.jpg\" class=\"inews-image\" width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"author avatar image\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n        <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Science &amp; Environment Correspondent<\/p>\n<p>Patients with advanced head and neck cancers in England will trial a \u201cpotentially transformative\u201d new vaccine as part of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/2025\/08\/nhs-to-fast-track-patients-with-head-and-neck-cancer-into-cancer-vaccine-trial\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NHS drive into personalised treatment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first patients have already received the jab, which uses  mRNA technology to train the immune system to fight cancerous cells.<\/p>\n<p>Around 100 more people will be enrolled on the trial at 15 hospitals over the next 12 months, while the NHS hopes thousands more will be recruited across the country for various kinds of cancer in the coming years.<\/p>\n<p>Who will get the first cancer jabs?<\/p>\n<p>Head and neck cancer is a general term to describe forms of the disease in those regions of the body, and can include cancer of the mouth, throat or voice box.<\/p>\n<p>Around 11,000 new cases are diagnosed in England every year.<\/p>\n<p>Despite advances in care for patients with head and neck cancer, the advanced form of the disease is difficult to treat and has high rates of recurrence, with two-year survival rates at under 50 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>This cancer vaccine trial will be run through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/cancer\/nhs-cancer-vaccine-launch-pad\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NHS Cancer Vaccine Launch Pad<\/a>, coordinated by the Southampton Clinical Trials Unit, which has already helped refer around 550 patients to trials of vaccines for bowel and skin cancers.<\/p>\n<p>The 15 hospitals involved<\/p>\n<p>The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre \u2013 Liverpool<\/p>\n<p>The Royal Marsden \u2013 Sutton<\/p>\n<p>The Royal Marsden \u2013 London<\/p>\n<p>Oxford Cancer Centre \u2013 Oxford<\/p>\n<p>Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust<\/p>\n<p>Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust \u2013 Leeds<\/p>\n<p>University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust \u2013 Southampton<\/p>\n<p>Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust \u2013 Preston<\/p>\n<p>Mount Vernon Cancer Centre \u2013 Hertfordshire<\/p>\n<p>Guy\u2019s &amp; St Thomas\u2019 NHS Foundation Trust \u2013 London<\/p>\n<p>UCLH \u2013 London<\/p>\n<p>Queen Elizabeth Hospital \u00a0\u2013 Birmingham<\/p>\n<p>Addenbrooke\u2019s Hospital \u2013 Cambridge<\/p>\n<p>Torbay Hospital \u2013 South Devon<\/p>\n<p>The Christie \u2013 Manchester<\/p>\n<p>How do the vaccines work? <\/p>\n<p>The vaccines use \u201cmRNA\u201d technology, first pioneered to create Covid jabs during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional vaccine technologies use an inactivated virus to trigger an immune response.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, mRNA vaccines use synthesised sequences of genetic code that carry the instructions needed for cells to make for themselves the proteins that trigger an immune response.<\/p>\n<p>The vaccine used in this trial, known as AHEAD-MERIT (BNT113-01), will help the immune system recognise and kill cancer cells containing human papillomavirus (HPV) proteins.<\/p>\n<p>The jabs are encoded with two proteins commonly found in head and neck cancers associated with high-risk types of HPV.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/cancer\/nhs-cancer-vaccine-launch-pad\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The reason they are called vaccines<\/a> is because they teach the immune system to fight cancer, in the same way that vaccines teach the immune system to protect itself from viruses and bacteria.<\/p>\n<p>But unlike traditional vaccines, they are not designed to prevent cancer from developing in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the hope is that these cancer vaccines may reduce the risk of the cancer coming back in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Will they cut cancer rates?
