Emmerdale<\/a> actor Joshua Richards has revealed an important scene between his character Bear Wolf and Joe Absolom’s Ray Walters, who had forced him into modern slavery in a harrowing storyline, was changed.<\/p>\n

The star recalled a scene where Ray lost his temper and struck Bear, but he used his insight into the character to alter Bear’s reaction from the original intent.<\/p>\n

He explained: “One thing we did when Ray slapped me, bless him \u2013 which Joe Absolom did so well… When he gave Bear a slap in front of everybody, the director said, ‘Can you show more reaction?’<\/p>\n

“I said, ‘Why? I don’t think he would. He’s been used to being slapped in the face all his life.’ And Joe said, ‘He’s quite right, what I’d like to do is this.’<\/p>\n

“So he slapped me… and it worked.<\/p>\n

“…[Ray] thought he had the right just to slap him around. But when he did hit him, it hurt his hand, because the guy’s been punched in the face for 40 years, [it’s] not gonna hurt him.”<\/p>\n

Richards told the anecdote in response to a question about how Bear might handle prison if he does get sent away for Ray’s death, something we’ll find out at the end of next week’s tense court scenes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“I think he’d be all right because of his ability to shut down,” Richards explained, adding: “He’s been on his own for most of his life, and he can cope with that.<\/p>\n

“Also, I think even when we saw him being abused by Ray, the physical abuse, I don’t think he’d be too worried in prison in a confrontational situation. Because even though he is in advanced years, he can still take care of himself.<\/p>\n

“He’s not afraid of anybody, and I think that’s from a lifetime of taking the knocks. And it’s not necessarily about being king pin or boss. It’s just the fact that he can physically take it because he’s used to being knocked around.”<\/p>\n
