{"id":561882,"date":"2026-05-02T05:18:15","date_gmt":"2026-05-02T05:18:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/561882\/"},"modified":"2026-05-02T05:18:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-02T05:18:15","slug":"artemis-ii-crew-reveal-the-1st-food-they-ate-after-splashing-down-on-earth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/561882\/","title":{"rendered":"Artemis II crew reveal the 1st food they ate after splashing down on Earth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The crew of <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp yahoo-link\" data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/artemis-ii-astronauts-head-white-164204397.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:NASA\u2019s Artemis II moon mission;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" target=\"_blank\">NASA\u2019s Artemis II moon mission<\/a> revealed on Friday morning the first thing they ate when they returned to Earth after their historic spaceflight last month: peanut M&amp;M\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Astronauts Reid Wiseman, Christina Koch, Victor Glover and Jeremy Hansen made history during their 10-day mission, <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp yahoo-link\" data-i13n=\"slk:traveling over a quarter-million miles from Earth;cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/10-iconic-artemis-ii-photos-100000165.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:traveling over a quarter-million miles from Earth;slk:traveling over a quarter-million miles from Earth;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" target=\"_blank\">traveling over a quarter-million miles from Earth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The quartet joined CBS Mornings for a live town hall special, Artemis II: A Celebration of Heroes, during which Wiseman revealed the crew\u2019s first snack as they waited to be picked up after splashdown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we landed, we splashed down into the Pacific Ocean, we\u2019re waiting for the rescue forces to come open the hatch, and Christina, out of her spacesuit pocket, goes, \u2018I got some peanut M&amp;Ms, anybody want some?\u2019\u201d Wiseman said. \u201cAnd so we&#8217;re leaning back against the side of the spacecraft, we\u2019ve just come back from the moon, we\u2019re just eating peanut M&amp;Ms. We were happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The astronauts\u2019 food choices during the flight were the source of some interest. According to NASA, some of the most common foods available to them included tortillas, nuts, barbecue beef brisket, cauliflower, macaroni and cheese, butternut squash, cookies and chocolate.<\/p>\n<p>Wiseman <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp yahoo-link\" data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/videos\/artemis-astronauts-talk-food-mission-133340421.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:told CBS;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" target=\"_blank\">told CBS<\/a> about one moment on the seventh day when they spoke to the crew of the International Space Station and realized they were eating the same foods: spicy green beans, broccoli au gratin and beef fajitas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was one of our favorite days and the best part about that whole call was we were all eating the same food,\u201d he told CBS.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Tiny Earth\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The four astronauts also discussed their &#8220;emotional&#8221; flight on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday night.<\/p>\n<p>Wiseman described how the Earth looked so small from hundreds of millions of miles away that it inspired the nickname \u201cTiny Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAround day three, we started to call it Tiny Earth because it\u2019s this big out the window,\u201d Wiseman said, making a small gesture with his hand. \u201cSo we\u2019d say, \u2018Oh, that\u2019s Tiny Earth!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The trip left a deep emotional impression on the astronauts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe thing that is hard to understand is we&#8217;re constantly going away from or back to the planet, so it&#8217;s changing the whole mission and the view,\u201d Wiseman told Fallon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is really what gets you. It\u2019s deeply moving for them, but also for the four of us.
