Labour said the incident showed a lack of leadership by Polanski, the leader of the Greens in England and Wales. Green officials, however, say it is also a result of a highly decentralised structure, which gives local parties significant power and makes actions like suspending candidates more time-consuming.<\/p>\n
Asked about the arrests and other incidents of alleged antisemitism by Green candidates, Polanski, who is Jewish, told BBC One\u2019s Laura Kuenssberg on Sunday programme that this was \u201cnot an abstract idea\u201d for him, and that tackling it was hugely important.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a Jewish person, those comments disgust me. It\u2019s important that we let the disciplinary process take its place, and that\u2019s exactly what we have,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He rejected the idea that this was something especially prevalent in the Greens: \u201cI don\u2019t believe we have a particular problem compared [with] wider society and other political parties.\u201d<\/p>\n
Polanski said he disowned candidates who had made such comments. Asked if he would \u201ctell people here today: don\u2019t vote for them, they don\u2019t stand for you\u201d, he replied: \u201cThat\u2019s right.\u201d<\/p>\n
Both women\u2019s names and details have been removed from the page of the Lambeth Greens\u2019 website listing their slate of candidates for Thursday.<\/p>\n
Steve Reed, the housing and communities secretary, who was leader of Lambeth council before entering parliament, said: \u201cThe Green party is rotting from the head down. Shame on Polanski\u2019s moral cowardice.
