They\u2019ve got one of the strongest marriages in showbiz, making them the ideal hosts for Netflix<\/a>\u2019s dating show Love Is Blind UK<\/a>. But Matt and Emma Willis admit there is something coming between them \u2014 golf<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m obsessed. It\u2019s slowly ruining my life,\u201d rues Matt Willis<\/a>, 42, before grinning and adding, \u201cBut in the greatest possible way!\u201d Emma Willis<\/a>, 49, who is sitting next to her husband of 17 years with her hand resting lightly on his thigh, rolls her eyes and deadpans, \u201cFor him!\u201d<\/p>\n But Matt either doesn\u2019t want to, or can\u2019t, stop gabbling about golf. \u201cI love it,\u201d he says, his eyes widening with enthusiasm as he adds, \u201cI\u2019ve got rules about it. I didn\u2019t get told to make these rules, I made them on my own. I don\u2019t play when it interferes with family time. I go when the kids are at school. I try not to make somebody a golf widow.\u201d<\/p>\n For Emma, who has three children<\/a> \u2014 Isabelle, 16, Ace, 13, and nine-year-old Trixie \u2014 with Matt, it\u2019s the non-stop chatter about golf that is wearing her down. And she\u2019s still mildly miffed about the golf lessons Matt bought her as a gift, before using them himself.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m only making digs about it because I don\u2019t hear anything else now other than golf,\u201d says Emma. \u201cI walk in the living room and it\u2019s on the f**king telly. The kids walk in, sigh and then they walk back out again.\u201d<\/p>\n And when Matt protests he\u2019s \u201cnever had a hobby\u201d, Emma retaliates by bringing up his drink and drug addictions, quipping, \u201cYou did, but they weren\u2019t very good for you!\u201d<\/p>\n READ MORE: ‘I’m trying to cut down my alcohol intake and this 99p low-calorie drink converted me’<\/a> Luckily, the pair\u2019s relationship is built on humour and Matt shrieks with laughter before explaining how he initially thought golf would be something he and Emma played together.<\/p>\n \u201cI thought it was too selfish to have a hobby so I bought me and Emma 10 golf lessons for Christmas<\/a>,\u201d he says. \u201cShe wasn\u2019t very interested so after a while I was like, \u2018Do you mind if I go?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n But surely Emma has her own hobbies? \u201cIf I had any time for a hobby, I\u2019d probably have one,\u201d she grins. \u201cBut job, husband, three kids\u2026 very little time for hobbies!\u201d<\/p>\n Matt is keen to rectify this. \u201cYou can do anything you want,\u201d he says, turning to Emma, \u201cas long as it\u2019s not involving naked men.\u201d And soon they\u2019re giggling again, this time at the idea of Emma starting her own Chippendales Agency, before Matt vetoes it on a technicality, saying it would actually be a job not a hobby.<\/p>\n Humour is clearly key to making their marriage work \u2014 but Emma admits they\u2019re not relationship experts, enjoying as many ups and downs as the next couple.<\/p>\n \u201cLove, time, commitment, compromise, f**k knows,\u201d she sighs as she ponders the ingredients to a successful union. \u201cI mean, hopefully we\u2019ll still be going in another 20 years or 30 years or 40 years and then we\u2019ll be in a box together!\u201d<\/p>\n The pair met in 2004 when Matt was in boyband Busted and Emma was a TV presenter on MTV. When he got her number he was desperate to call her but pals persuaded him to play it cool.<\/p>\n \u201cI got passed Emma\u2019s number and I got told by everyone to wait three days, don\u2019t seem too keen. So I waited three days dying to call. It worked though, didn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n In 2008 they had a star-studded wedding at Rushton Hall in Northamptonshire, which was featured in OK ! magazine and attended by guests including David Gest<\/a>, Stephen Mulhern<\/a> and Holly Willoughby<\/a>.<\/p>\n Matt knew that Emma was the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. \u201cI was like, \u2018I never want this to end, how do I make this not end? I need to marry her,\u2019\u201d he says.<\/p>\n The second series of Love Is Blind UK is about to start. In the show, singles fall in love without seeing each other \u2014 seated in pods, they talk to each other through an opaque wall. Only when they are engaged can they meet in the flesh. For some happy couples, the format appears to work.<\/p>\n Bobby and Jasmine Johnson, who married on the show last year, have just announced they\u2019re expecting their first baby. Matt and Emma were among the first to know. \u201cWe were so happy,\u201d says Emma.<\/p>\n For Emma and Matt, raising a family together cemented their relationship and made it stronger. \u201cHaving children for us was such a massive thing,\u201d says Matt. \u201cIt changed everything. It takes it to a whole new level. It\u2019s bonkers but I love it.\u201d<\/p>\n Openness, honesty and therapy are the foundations their marriage is built on, and the pair are both keen to nurture their relationship. \u201cWe like to keep our eye across everything,\u201d says Emma. \u201cSo we don\u2019t drop the ball, we make sure we have time for each other and prioritise that.\u201d<\/p>\n Matt, who keeps a gratitude journal as part of his drink and drugs recovery, adds, \u201cI never want to miss something. I want to be asking, \u2018Are we alright?\u2019 I want to be on top of things.\u201d<\/p>\n Earlier this year, Matt feared for their family when Emma had to undergo keyhole heart surgery after being diagnosed with a hole in her heart. With Emma in hospital Matt took the lead, but Emma didn\u2019t take a back seat for long. \u201cShe\u2019s not very good at sitting still,\u201d shares Matt.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m all good now,\u201d says Emma. \u201cI had a bit of time off.\u201d For now, Emma and Matt\u2019s lives revolve around their careers and their children, but one day they\u2019ll be retired \u2014 and they\u2019ve got a plan for that too.<\/p>\n \u201cI would like to drive around the world<\/a>. In one of those flipped Transit vans,\u201d says Emma. \u201cI love those. I get fed them all the time on my Instagram<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n Now it\u2019s time for Matt to roll his eyes. \u201cShe keeps showing me these videos,\u201d he laughs. \u201cAnd I\u2019m like, \u2018Look at this one, it\u2019s like a two-bedroom apartment, they\u2019re bigger than RVs, they\u2019re like the Harry Potter<\/a> bus,\u2019 interrupts Emma.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019d also like to build one and then drive it somewhere.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m in!\u201d Matt says, ready to go right now. \u201cGet the kids in the camper van, sell the house, let\u2019s go!\u201d<\/p>\n Like this story?
