{"id":565819,"date":"2026-05-04T15:03:17","date_gmt":"2026-05-04T15:03:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/565819\/"},"modified":"2026-05-04T15:03:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T15:03:17","slug":"gresford-architects-clads-low-carbon-oxfordshire-bungalow-in-cedar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/565819\/","title":{"rendered":"Gresford Architects clads low-carbon Oxfordshire bungalow in cedar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Local studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/gresford-architects\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gresford Architects<\/a> has upgraded the Old Orchard, a 1980s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/bungalows\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bungalow<\/a> in Oxfordshire, with a low-impact and modern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/extensions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">extension<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The timber-clad home was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/refurbishments\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">refurbished<\/a> for the studio&#8217;s principal architect, Tom Gresford and his family, after recognising the site&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/carbon-neutral-design\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">carbon-neutral<\/a> potential \u2013 a key factor in their search for a countryside property following COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2320927 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/the-old-orchard-gresford-architects-house-oxfordshire-united-kingdom-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_11.jpeg\" alt=\"Gresford extension of Oxfordshire bungalow\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Gresford Architects has extended a countryside bungalow<\/p>\n<p>Located in Littleworth, West Oxfordshire, the country house is set back from the street and overlooks the Thames Valley.<\/p>\n<p>Originally built in the 1960s, the bungalow underwent its first remodel in the 1980s. Despite its good condition, its interiors were in need of an upgrade for contemporary and family-friendly living.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2320926 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/the-old-orchard-gresford-architects-house-oxfordshire-united-kingdom-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_9-.jpeg\" alt=\"Timber-clad extension for bungalow in Thames Valley\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The extension aligns with EnerPHIT guidelines<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The idea was to take a typical bungalow and maximise its potential, both spatially and environmentally,&#8221; Gresford told Dezeen. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wanted to increase its floor area without impacting the existing footprint or foundations, which we did by adding a new first floor to part of the house.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gresfordarchitects.co.uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gresford Architects<\/a> approached the project with the aim of keeping the use of new materials to a minimum, while reusing and repurposing elements from the original structure wherever possible.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2320925 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/the-old-orchard-gresford-architects-house-oxfordshire-united-kingdom-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_8-.jpeg\" alt=\"Glazed room lets in light, in Gresford Architects extension\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Materials were reused or repurposed, keeping the carbon footprint low<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the project aligns with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.passivhaustrust.org.uk\/UserFiles\/File\/2014\/Guidance\/EnerPHit%20pres%20Oct%202011.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">EnerPHIT<\/a> guidance, the Passivhaus standard for retrofit projects.<\/p>\n<p>These guidelines require that as much as possible of the existing building is either kept or reused, ensuring that materials with high levels of embodied carbon are left unaltered to keep the carbon footprint low.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2320923 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/the-old-orchard-gresford-architects-house-oxfordshire-united-kingdom-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_4-.jpeg\" alt=\"Oxfordshire extension uses colours to differentiate use of spaces\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The ground floor colour scheme was informed by Japanese kimonos<\/p>\n<p>To create a uniform aesthetic between the old and new structures, Gresford Architects enveloped the home in western red cedar, which was harvested from trees on the site itself.<\/p>\n<p>A segment of the roof was removed and replaced with a timber-framed extension, which unfurls along the site&#8217;s cruciform plan. The design of the powder-coated corrugated steel roof was informed by neighbouring agricultural buildings.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2320924 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/the-old-orchard-gresford-architects-house-oxfordshire-united-kingdom-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_6-.jpeg\" alt=\"A green kitchen in the bungalow\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>An MVHR system was installed to regulate temperature<\/p>\n<p>The home has also been externally insulated, resulting in lower U-values and better insulation.<\/p>\n<p>While no additional heating system was needed, the studio chose to use an energy-efficient MVHR system for cross ventilation as well as renewable energy sources, including solar panels and an air source heat pump.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The MVHR system enables the interiors to feel fresh and well-ventilated even when doors are shut,&#8221; said Gresford.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/04\/21\/neil-dusheiko-architects-church-house\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/neil-dusheiko-architects-church-house-extension-uk-sq2_dezeen_2364_col_0.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Church House by Neil Dusheiko Architects\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Neil Dusheiko Architects extends Cambridgeshire home to frame neighbouring church\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the ground floor, existing stud walls were removed to open the space into a series of colourful blocks. Each space serves its own purpose and is separated from the others by sliding pocket doors.<\/p>\n<p>The layout and colourful sections draw inspiration from the family&#8217;s time in Japan, incorporating traditional colours and patterns from kimonos.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2320928 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/the-old-orchard-gresford-architects-house-oxfordshire-united-kingdom-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_16.jpeg\" alt=\"Colourful walls brighten up a study\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Existing stud walls were removed<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We love the colours of the interiors, which change constantly as you navigate around the house and create a completely unique feeling,&#8221; said Gresford.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The same goes for the texture of the timber cladding, which, because it was grown on site and allowed to dry naturally in the garage, has a liveliness and texture to it that bought wood seldom does.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2320929 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/the-old-orchard-gresford-architects-house-oxfordshire-united-kingdom-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_20.jpeg\" alt=\"A family entertainment room\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Each room has large windows that bring in light<\/p>\n<p>Other than the removal of the stud walls, the only major structural change on the ground floor was the replacement of the original conservatory with a modern glazed addition.<\/p>\n<p>The light-filled room opens onto a covered verandah, allowing the interior to flow into the surrounding landscape.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2320930 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/the-old-orchard-gresford-architects-house-oxfordshire-united-kingdom-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_21.jpeg\" alt=\"A dark green staircase leads to new extension of Oxfordshire bungalow\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The colours extend upstairs via the staircase<\/p>\n<p>The colourful palette extends upstairs via the dark green stairwell and hallway. A built-in slide is hidden behind a &#8220;secret&#8221; door in the wall and was built around the home&#8217;s main staircase.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The slide was a promise we made to the kids after years of house hunting,&#8221; said Gresford. &#8220;It&#8217;s provided endless fun for them so far!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2320931 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/the-old-orchard-gresford-architects-house-oxfordshire-united-kingdom-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_23.jpeg\" alt=\"The Old Orchard overlooks views of the Thames Valley\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The Old Orchard overlooks views of the Thames Valley<\/p>\n<p>The upper-level extension is organised around the family&#8217;s bedrooms and bathrooms.<\/p>\n<p>Each of the children&#8217;s bedrooms features mezzanines, making use of the high ceilings and creating more space for play below.
