The Department for Work and Pensions has been warned the welfare system is not working for patients – amid calls for an NHS shake-up which could see four conditions have benefits axed. Calling for more technology, George cited four conditions as examples, saying: “The majority of conditions keeping people out of the workforce \u2013 musculoskeletal disorders, cardiovascular disease, depression and anxiety, respiratory illness \u2013 are not only treatable but, in most cases, detectable and manageable long before they become disabling.<\/p>\n “We can tackle almost everything if we catch it early enough. We can prevent much of what we are currently treating if we identify risk earlier still. Our bodies have a highly sensitive early warning system.<\/p>\n READ MORE MOT warning for popular car which has just 71 per cent pass rate<\/a><\/p>\n “Tiny changes can be seen and interpreted with today\u2019s screening technology, and that capability is advancing rapidly.”<\/p>\n George wrote smartphones can already monitor signals that highlight risk and herald illness long before a GP appointment, a referral or a fit note.<\/p>\n He said: “That opens the door to a radical new prevention-first approach to healthcare in which we intervene before conditions compromise people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n “This is revolutionary for patients.” It could also be transformative for the DWP<\/a>, George said, amid calls to trim the welfare bill.<\/p>\n
