Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively reached a settlement in their It Ends with Us legal dispute<\/a>, ending a contentious battle over accusations of sexual harassment and an alleged subsequent smear campaign during the production of their 2024 film.<\/p>\n

On Monday, nearly two weeks before the case was scheduled to go to trial,<\/a> the two actors settled the dispute.<\/p>\n

Lively, 38, had originally filed a lawsuit against Baldoni, 42, in January 2025, accusing him of conspiring with publicists to preemptively destroy her reputation after she privately alleged sexual harassment on the movie set.<\/a> <\/p>\n

Baldoni, who directed the film and starred alongside Lively, consistently denied the harassment claims and any involvement in a smear campaign. He maintained that Lively\u2019s complaints were fabricated in an attempt to gain creative control over the movie.<\/p>\n

In a joint statement, the parties declared: \u201cRaising awareness, and making a meaningful impact in the lives of domestic violence survivors \u2014 and all survivors \u2014 is a goal that we stand behind. … It is our sincere hope that this brings closure and allows all involved to move forward constructively and in peace, including a respectful environment online.\u201d<\/p>\n

Baldoni had claimed Lively\u2019s complaints about his behavior were made up as part of an effort for her to seize creative control of the movie.<\/p>\n

The settlement will allow both sides to avoid a trial that would have featured Hollywood\u2019s ugliest side and potentially led to more image-damaging revelations.<\/p>\n

It comes after both actors had some of their legal claims tossed <\/a>out by the judge in recent months.<\/p>\n

Lively\u2019s sexual harassment claims were dismissed in early April by Judge Lewis J. Liman, who ruled that she couldn\u2019t pursue them under federal law because she was an independent contractor rather than an employee when she worked on the movie.<\/p>\n

The same judge previously dismissed a lawsuit in which Baldoni and his production company, Wayfarer Studios, accused Lively and her husband, Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds<\/a>, of defamation and extortion.<\/p>\n

It Ends With Us was released in August 2024 and exceeded box-office expectations.<\/p>\n

In her lawsuit, Lively said that during filming, Baldoni made inappropriate comments about her appearance, violated physical boundaries while filming a love scene, and pushed for nudity \u2014 against Lively\u2019s wishes \u2014 during a scene in which her character was giving birth.<\/p>\n

Baldoni denied doing anything outside the realm of the normal creative process of making a movie.<\/p>\n

The judge, in the decision tossing out the sexual harassment claims, acknowledged the complexity of the matter, noting that creative artists \u201cmust have some amount of space to experiment within the bounds of an agreed script without fear of being held liable for sexual harassment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The trial was to focus on Lively\u2019s claim that Baldoni and the studio retaliated against her sexual harassment complaints by hiring publicists to turn the public against her. Her lawyers claimed that the smear campaign included hiring a \u201cdigital army\u201d to post bogus negative content about Lively on social media platforms, and feeding \u201cmanufactured content to unwitting reporters.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lawsuit said the purpose was to \u201cretaliate against Ms. Lively by battering her image, harming her businesses, and causing her family severe emotional harm.\u201d<\/p>\n

Baldoni\u2019s lawyers have claimed it was Lively who was strategically manipulating Baldoni\u2019s public image, partly by leveraging help from her famous friends, such as Taylor Swift<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Lively appeared in the 2005 film The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and the hit TV series Gossip Girl from 2007 to 2012 before starring in films including The Town and The Shallows.<\/p>\n

Baldoni starred in the TV comedy Jane the Virgin, directed the 2019 film Five Feet Apart and wrote Man Enough, a book challenging traditional notions of masculinity.<\/p>\n
