The Department for Work and Pensions has been told to “means-test” the state pension for “Boomers”. Baby boomers are the demographic cohort born between 1946 and 1964, following the end of World War II.<\/p>\n

But amid calls for the DWP<\/a> to change the Triple Lock pledge, there are calls for the benefits department, which is responsible for welfare payments, to means-test.<\/p>\n

The Sir Tony Blair Institute, or TBI, has called on the Labour Party<\/a> government to deviate from its previous pledge to keep the metric for the remainder of this Parliament. The Triple Lock handed state pensioners a \u00a3575 increase in April.<\/p>\n

But there are fears it is becoming unaffordable. The Telegraph’s Rob White<\/a> warned: ” Boomers are more entitled than Gen Z \u2013 it\u2019s time to means-test their state pension.<\/p>\n

” Older generations conveniently forget they hold more than half the nation\u2019s housing wealth.”<\/p>\n

In response to the TBI’s warning last week, Jonathan Cribb, deputy director and head of retirement, savings and ageing at the Institute for Fiscal Studies, spoke out.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cAny increase in flexibility here needs to be balanced against the increasing complexity of the system \u2013 and indeed this move would be in the opposite direction to reforms that have simplified the state pension system in recent decades.\u201d<\/p>\n

White added: “It\u2019s crystal clear that something must be done about the cost.” He went on, adding: “So, the only remaining answer is means-testing.”<\/p>\n

A DWP spokesperson said: \u201cSupporting pensioners is a priority and our commitment to the triple lock for the rest of this Parliament means millions of pensioners will see their yearly state pension rise by up to \u00a32,100.<\/p>\n
