Over<br \/>\nthat time, the two planets exhibited<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap250530.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">retrograde motion<\/a>,<br \/>\nmeaning they appeared to move backward in the sky. This<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/1nVSzzYCAYk?si=I-42YO6rHQZ9CuNV&amp;t=124\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">apparent backwards motion<\/a><br \/>\noccurs when Earth overtakes the slower outer planets as they orbit the Sun. Imagine the Solar System<br \/>\nis a running track. Earth &#8220;runs&#8221; faster along the inside of the track compared to the outer planets.<br \/>\nAs Earth approaches, aligns, and then &#8220;laps&#8221; the outer planets, they change position from ahead to behind from<br \/>\nthe Earth&#8217;s perspective. This perspective shift is what causes the outer planets to change position in the<br \/>\nnight sky.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/1177973763\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">An animation<\/a><br \/>\ncorresponding to today\u2019s image shows Saturn and Neptune\u2019s months-long dance across<br \/>\nthe northern night sky. Saturn stepped from<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/noirlab.edu\/public\/education\/constellations\/pisces\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Pisces constellation<\/a><br \/>\ninto <a href=\"https:\/\/noirlab.edu\/public\/education\/constellations\/aquarius\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aquarius<\/a><br \/>\nand back again while Neptune remained in Pisces.
