Lucy Punch returns as Amanda in the second season of Amandaland<\/a>, which kicked off tonight<\/a> on BBC One \u2014 and the result is every bit as chaotic as the show’s debut run. Juggling teenagers, her online “brand”, and her “co-lab” working at Kitchen\u2019s Bathrooms and Kitchens, Amanda has now settled into her downsized life in “SoHa”. But if anything, she’s more determined than ever to claw her way back up the social ladder. <\/p>\n

Resigned to staying in the area, Amanda becomes instantly excited this season after the arrival of a trendy new coffee shop, which she interprets as a sign that gentrification is on its way. Her optimism only grows when she discovers a large house nearby has gone on the market. She quickly becomes fixated on the idea of moving again and tries to persuade her mum, Felicity, to financially back up the plan. But reality quickly kicks in. <\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Amanda remains distracted by her basement neighbour Mal, whose presence continues to complicate her already chaotic life. Things become even more awkward when she meets his ex-partner Abs, a no-nonsense figure whose reappearance shifts the dynamic. As if this wasn’t enough, Amanda continues to juggle parenting with her obsession with status and appearance, while her long-suffering best friend Anne remains the only grounded presence in her life \u2014 until one of her videos on social media goes viral. But who is returning alongside Lucy Punch? And who has joined the cast? <\/p>\n

A number of familiar faces are back in the Motherland spin-off, with Joanna Lumley, Philippa Dunne and Samuel Anderson all reprising their roles as Felicity, Anne and Mal respectively. On-screen, Amanda may believe she is evolving socially, but the world around her is largely unchanged. “Amanda is still in SoHa, she\u2019s more settled now but still doing everything she can elevate to her social standing and circumstances. She\u2019s just as delusional about herself as ever,” Lucy Punch explained to the BBC<\/a>. <\/p>\n

This season also introduces several new characters who disrupt Amanda’s carefully curated worldview. Harriet Webb (Mr Bigstuff, Big Boys) joins the cast as Abs, Mal’s ex-partner and the mother of his son Ned. Her arrival creates immediate friction, particularly as Amanda struggles to connect with her. <\/p>\n

Mal actor Samuel Anderson described the backstory between his character and Abs as one shaped by mistakes and unresolved history. “Mal and Abs clearly seemed to have tried to take on too much when they were too young,” he said. “But they seem to have pretty much put most of their regrets and mistakes behind them, though some things kind of float past the surface occasionally.” That lingering history sparks up more tension, especially as Abs refuses to be easily impressed by Amanda’s attempts at charm. <\/p>\n

Also joining the series this season is Abs’ new husband, JJ, played by Ekow Quartey, with whom Mal forms an unexpected friendship. Samuel said that proximity extended beyond the screen as one of his standout moments from filming came while working alongside Ekow. <\/p>\n

“My favourite scene to film was building the shed with JJ and Ned with an appearance by the living lady legend Lumley,” Samuel said. “Us three boys have a great vibe together and then we\u2019ll often just get gassed that we\u2019re working with Joanna which just puts more wind in our sails.”<\/p>\n

The new season also features a cameo from Pam Ferris, known for her roles in the Harry Potter franchise and her cameo<\/a> in Call the Midwife. Pam is set to play Elspeth in Amandaland, a frail neighbour who happens to own a highly desirable house in the area. Amanda quickly becomes fixated on the property and attempts to befriend Elspeth. “I loved my scenes with Pam Ferris,” Lucy shared. “She\u2019s brilliant. I love playing Amanda being devious, when she thinks she\u2019s being charming and getting away with it.”<\/p>\n

But whether Amanda’s tactics are effective remains to be seen. One thing is certain \u2014 season two of Amandaland doesn’t change Amanda. Instead, it doubles down on her. Amanda isn’t rising socially, she’s just getting better at embarrassing herself. But there’s no guarantee she’ll even realise it. <\/p>\n
