Publishers have said that an increasing number of writers are using AI tools to write manuscripts<\/a>. They have warned that as the sophistication of AI tools increases, it will become harder to identify whether works were created by humans.<\/p>\n Horowitz said in the interview this week that the limitations of the technology needed to be understood and gave the example of when he had asked ChatGPT<\/a> for an adjective to describe the shape of a potato. It returned the word \u201cellipsoid\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is when you drop the artificial intelligence and use your own intelligence. Readers hearing that the potato on her plate was \u2018ellipsoid\u2019 are going to say, \u2018What the hell is this guy talking about?\u2019\u201d the 71-year-old writer said.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s useful to have immediate knowledge but not unrestrained. You\u2019ve always got to judge what you\u2019re being told and also look for a second source,\u201d he said, adding: \u201cIn the old days I\u2019d go to a library. I\u2019d look up stuff in books. What\u2019s the difference between using AI and going straight to the point?\u201d<\/p>\n In an interview with Times Radio on Wednesday, Horowitz said that while the tools could be good for research, they were \u201cdangerous friends\u201d.<\/p>\n He said that he had not used AI to write any of his novels, adding: \u201cPeople can tell books that have been written by AI simply because AI isn\u2019t very good. It can\u2019t emote, AI can\u2019t poke fun at itself, AI has no sense of irony.\u201d<\/p>\n He added that he thinks \u201ceven a sentence of AI would sit in my book as like something floating on a pond, as something you don\u2019t really want to see when you\u2019re having a swim\u201d. <\/p>\n \u201cIt just doesn\u2019t work. It\u2019s a different world. And so it is, as I say, a friend, but a dangerous friend and one to be kept at a distance.\u201d<\/p>\n Although Horowitz has admitted to using AI, he has turned his back on other elements of the \u201cnew world\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cI am free of all social media<\/a> and feel so much healthier and better for it. The change is really quite dramatic,\u201d Horowitz said after revealing that he left X two years ago. Horowitz said that he had found himself \u201cdisappearing into it\u201d and had been encountering \u201cnoticeably more toxic content\u201d.<\/p>\n The author keeps up with the news \u2014 he wrote a letter<\/a> to The Times this week criticising the comments<\/a> of the former ambassador Sir Tony Brenton, who called upon the UK\u2019s Jewish community to be more critical of the Israeli government \u2014 but he prefers starting the day in a more artistic way. He begins each day with a poem, saying that he finds it \u201cendlessly encouraging and life-enhancing\u201d.
