{"id":571285,"date":"2026-05-07T15:41:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T15:41:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/571285\/"},"modified":"2026-05-07T15:41:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T15:41:08","slug":"hogway-giveaway-to-help-east-yorkshire-hedgehogs-roam-about","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/571285\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Hogway&#8217; giveaway to help East Yorkshire hedgehogs roam about"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The giveaway is part of National Hedgehog Awareness Week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Hedgehog <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-60436607\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">numbers have declined<\/a> by up to 75% in rural areas and 30% in towns across Britain since 2000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A spokesperson for East Riding of Yorkshire Council said: &#8220;Residents are also encouraged to create their own hogways, by cutting hedgehog-sized openings in their gates and fences where a lack of gaps presently excludes spiny visitors&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">People are also asked to report sightings online to the <a href=\"https:\/\/bighedgehogmap.org\/\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hedgehog Preservation Society&#8217;s Big Hedgehog Map., external<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Councillor Paul West said: &#8220;We&#8217;re delighted to promote the environment in the East Riding, and this is a fantastic way we can play our part to support local wildlife. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We encourage all residents to install their own hogways, and log any hedgehogs they see.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The giveaway is part of National Hedgehog Awareness Week.
