Policymakers attributed the slump to a value-added tax increase at the start of the year,\u00a0\u201cunfavorable weather conditions,\u201d as well as three fewer working days in January and February than last year.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">In April, President Vladimir Putin\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoscowtimes.com\/2026\/04\/15\/putin-demands-answers-as-russias-economy-undershoots-expectations-a92514\" title=\"said\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> some of those reasons were insufficient in explaining why the economy is performing worse than expected and called for urgent measures to revive growth.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">The slump comes as the Central Bank gradually cuts its key interest rate from a two-decade high.\u00a0Punishingly high borrowing costs over the last two years have stifled manufacturing and business investment, even as policymakers struggle to rein in inflation that continues to erode domestic purchasing power.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tnews<br \/>\n\t\t<a data-id=\"in-article-block\" class=\"related-article__inner\" href=\"https:\/\/www.themoscowtimes.com\/2026\/05\/08\/unicredit-to-sell-part-of-russian-subsidiary-to-uae-investor\" title=\"UniCredit to Sell Part of Russian Subsidiary to UAE Investor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tUniCredit to Sell Part of Russian Subsidiary to UAE Investor<br \/>\n\t\t\tRead more<br \/>\n\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\">Russia\u2019s Central Bank said in its medium-term forecast that it expects economic activity to rebound in the second quarter, forecasting 0.9% growth between April and June due to a higher number of working days in the period compared to last year.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\">For the full year, policymakers maintained their 2026 GDP growth forecast at a modest 0.5-1.5%, citing subdued consumer demand and investment activity.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9\">The Central Bank also indicated it is now \u201cmore cautious\u201d about lowering its key interest rate, pointing to inflationary risks tied to \u201cexternal conditions and budget policy parameters,\u201d\u00a0a reference to the war in Iran and its impact on energy markets.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9\">First-quarter inflation was 5.9%, slightly lower than the 6.3% previously forecast.
