{"id":572368,"date":"2026-05-08T04:53:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T04:53:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/572368\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T04:53:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T04:53:11","slug":"keir-starmer-urged-to-plan-resignation-to-avert-labour-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/572368\/","title":{"rendered":"Keir Starmer urged to plan resignation to avert Labour war"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"4fd757a4-0ad1-4bd4-81c3-3dde399a647e\">Ed Miliband has privately suggested to Sir Keir Starmer that he should consider setting out a timeline for his departure amid concerns he will be forced out of No 10\u00a0after the election results, The Times has been told.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"ca9c44e7-967f-4b18-8a49-443acc7ed66b\">Two sources familiar with the discussion said that the energy secretary and former Labour leader made the suggestion during a private meeting with the prime minister\u00a0about\u00a0a fortnight ago.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9c5c5d7a-1df3-4272-be0c-d1503b7fe1df\">While Miliband remains supportive of Starmer he is concerned that Labour will descend into a bitter and damaging leadership contest\u00a0in the wake of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/topic\/local-elections\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the elections<\/a>, which are expected to be disastrous for Starmer.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8067bdd2-f634-44f3-aaa4-d7ea37630a6e\">Angela Rayner, the former deputy prime minister, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/politics\/article\/wes-streeting-labour-leadership-campaign-5dxtgnwrv\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wes Streeting, the health secretary, are both said to have the support<\/a> of the 81 Labour MPs needed to trigger a contest. Rayner is considering making a move despite\u00a0the fact she has not been\u00a0cleared by HM Revenue &amp; Customs over her tax affairs.<\/p>\n<p id=\"5a633dd6-6efc-4e49-b11c-e70519b52f65\">Miliband is viewed by allies\u00a0as a \u201ckingmaker\u201d to a potential run for the leadership by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/topic\/andy-burnham\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andy Burnham<\/a>. Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, is understood to have told supporters in recent days that a backbench MP is willing to stand down as soon as this weekend to facilitate his return to Westminster. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"   height=\"2905\" width=\"4357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/4220fcd4-a094-45bb-8476-bc2826d6ddeb.jpg\" alt=\"Angela Rayner, former UK Deputy Prime Minister, smiles during the National Growth Debate in London.\" class=\"wp-image-22077669\"\/>Angela Rayner THOMAS KRYCH\/ANDALOU\/GETTY IMAGES<\/p>\n<p id=\"5a633dd6-6efc-4e49-b11c-e70519b52f65\">Miliband has ruled himself out as a candidate to succeed Starmer but is increasingly concerned that the prime minister may not survive to fight the next election.<\/p>\n<p id=\"5f25af56-af85-4c4f-b53a-79af9f631281\">Labour is facing historic election losses as the results are announced over the next two days. It could finish third in Wales, where it has been the dominant party for more than a century, and third in Scotland. It faces losing as many as 1,800 councillors in the local elections in England as it haemorrhages support to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/topic\/reform-uk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reform UK<\/a>, the Greens and independent candidates.<\/p>\n<p id=\"baa95c66-5ac1-4a83-a5be-916d80ff7ffb\">The aftermath is expected to prompt increasing calls from senior <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/topic\/labour-party\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Labour<\/a> figures for a change in leadership and result in some MPs calling for\u00a0an immediate challenge to Starmer.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e272391c-f917-48aa-9a13-1d3958238d35\">Miliband was said by colleagues to be \u201cvery down\u201d and privately in despair over the probable scale of Labour\u2019s losses to Reform UK and the Greens.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"13abbf92-0a48-445b-80d9-e279b6e10652\">Miliband will join cabinet loyalists in backing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/topic\/keir-starmer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Starmer<\/a> this weekend, but he has significant concerns about the risk of Labour descending into a civil war and the damage it would do to the party and the government unless the prime minister sets a timeline for his departure.<\/p>\n<p>Politics newsletter<\/p>\n<p>Get our daily insider\u2019s guide to Westminster, plus a rundown of PMQs every Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tSign up with one click<\/p>\n<p id=\"9442b797-e535-42c9-8c71-212a8f7f2b4b\">He is understood to have raised his concerns during a private discussion with Starmer during which the two men talked about potential options for the aftermath of the elections.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f5f7e4fe-9680-4b0e-b183-07a4807e226d\">Miliband is supporting a return to Westminster for Burnham as the left-of-centre candidate best positioned to restore Labour\u2019s fortunes. Those who have spoken to the mayor said an announcement could be made as soon as Saturday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"1e3a3181-e50d-4017-8670-d53ac23ea14e\">Marie Rimmer, 79, the MP for St Helens South &amp; Whiston \u2014 close to Burnham\u2019s former constituency of Leigh &amp; Atherton \u2014 is believed by colleagues to be the likeliest candidate. Instead they support backbench efforts to force the prime minister to name a date to depart on his own terms, allowing Burnham time to return to the Commons and succeed without a contest.<\/p>\n<p id=\"585e0b72-d89d-4005-8e3c-89ceef4321d2\">Rayner will \u201ctake the temperature\u201d of colleagues before deciding whether to mount a formal challenge.
