These charges carry a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The pair appeared at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday and were remanded in custody until Monday, when their lawyers said they would apply for bail. Neither was required to speak at the brief hearing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Another of Kawsar Ahmad&#8217;s adult children, Zahra Ahmad, also arrived in Melbourne on Thursday but was not detained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">For Safar, police allege she travelled to Syria in 2015 to join her husband, who had previously left Australia and joined IS. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">She has also been charged with being a member of a terrorist organisation. Both offences carry a maximum penalty of up to 10 years&#8217; imprisonment. She was remanded in custody on Friday and will next appear in court in July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">AFP Assistant Commissioner for Counter Terrorism Stephen Nutt said police have being investigating &#8220;all Australians who travelled to declared conflict areas and will ensure those who are alleged to have committed a criminal offence are put before the courts&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;This remains an active investigation into very serious allegations,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/czj2emlv2kjo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">three women who were arrested on Thursday<\/a> were part of a group of four women and nine children who arrived in Australia on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">They are part of a larger cohort of 34 Australian women and children who had been living at the al-Roj camp in Syria since 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The cohort left the camp in February in a bid to return to Australia but were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cvg5ed05pplo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">returned to the camp for &#8220;technical reasons&#8221;<\/a> with the Australian government refusing to offer them any assistance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">One member of the cohort was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c4g2dgjrx75o\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">banned from returning to Australia<\/a> earlier this year when the government issued a &#8220;temporary exclusion order&#8221;, meaning that person cannot return for up to two years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">There were chaotic scenes at Melbourne airport on Thursday evening when the only woman who was not arrested emerged from the arrivals hall. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A group of about 15 men, mostly clad in black, swarmed around her and the children to cover their faces from the waiting media pack. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Australian Federal Police (AFP) allege Kawsar Ahmad travelled to Syria in 2014 with her husband and children,&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":572422,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[49,50,51,47,52,48],"class_list":["post-572421","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-headlines","tag-headlines","tag-news","tag-top-news","tag-top-stories","tag-topnews","tag-topstories"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/572421","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=572421"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/572421\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/572422"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=572421"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=572421"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=572421"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
