At the time of writing, the party has lost almost 900 councillors, it no longer holds power in the Welsh Senedd, and has been almost wiped out by Reform in some areas of the north-west.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Labour MPs are furious. As a result, many of them have begun to question Keir Starmer\u2019s position. After such a damaging set of elections, can the party continue on this track? Or, in order to avoid oblivion, is the question of a change of leadership now becoming unavoidable?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here is the New Statesman\u2019s rolling tracker of those who have publicly called for Starmer to go: \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>1. John McDonnell<\/p>\n<p>McDonnell told LBC \u201cwe could lose the Labour party\u201d under Keir Starmer\u2019s leadership. <\/p>\n<p>                            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/politics\/uk-politics\/2026\/05\/javascript(void);\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dl6pgk4f88hky.cloudfront.net\/2021\/09\/TNS_master_logo.svg\" class=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Subscribe to the New Statesman today and save 75% <\/p>\n<p>2. Ian Lavery <\/p>\n<p>Lavery <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BBCWorldatOne\/status\/2052724948695998677?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">told the BBC<\/a>: \u201cKeir Hardie started the Labour Party\u2026 It could be another Keir \u2013 Keir Starmer \u2013 that could end the party forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>3. Jonathan Brash <\/p>\n<p>Brash reiterated his previous call for the Prime Minister to resign in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GBNEWS\/status\/2052569421378682991?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">GB News<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>4. Clive Lewis <\/p>\n<p>Lewis <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/labourlewis\/status\/2052771945062482261?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">said in a statement<\/a> on X that Starmer should set out a timeline for his departure. <\/p>\n<p>5. Louise Haigh<\/p>\n<p>Haigh<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/freddimbleby\/status\/2052761224681533474?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> told ITV <\/a>that Starmer cannot lead Labour into another election. <\/p>\n<p>6. Graham Stringer<\/p>\n<p>Stringer <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TalkTV\/status\/2052776201689649376?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">said<\/a>: \u201cI don\u2019t think he can fight the next election if the Labour Party wants to survive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>7. Conor Naismith<\/p>\n<p>Naismith said in a statement: \u201cIn the wake of these catastrophic local elections results, with regret, it is clear to me that we need new leadership.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>8. Anneliese Midgley<\/p>\n<p>Midgley <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PippaCrerar\/status\/2052768255937224816?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">said<\/a> it\u2019s clear the PM cannot lead Labour into another election and called on him to set out a timeline for his departure. <\/p>\n<p>9. Richard Burgon <\/p>\n<p>Burgon said in a statement: \u201cIt is clear that Keir has fought his last election as Labour leader and, deep down, he will know it. The party should now work towards a timetable for an orderly transition to a new leader by the end of this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>10. Simon Opher <\/p>\n<p>Opher said in a statement: \u201cThe Prime Minister cannot take our party into the next general election. We owe it to our members, elected representatives, and the country, to set aside pride and ambition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>11. Olivia Blake <\/p>\n<p>Blake <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/_katedevlin\/status\/2052785929983570306?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">said<\/a>: \u201cThe PM \u201cneeds to think about his position\u201d and that there needs to be an \u201corderly plan\u201d for a post-Starmer Labour party.<\/p>\n<p>12. Sarah Owen<\/p>\n<p>Owen <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/breeallegretti\/status\/2052779696878669853?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">said<\/a>: \u201cUnless Keir Starmer delivers tangible change and truly connects with the public on a human level, he can\u2019t lead us into another election (locally or nationally). People want politics and politicians who are up-front and true to their values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>13. David Baines <\/p>\n<p>Baines <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/breeallegretti\/status\/2052780486460653777?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">told BBC News<\/a> that Starmer is not the right person to lead Labour into the next general election.<\/p>\n<p>14. Paula Barker <\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Barker called on the PM to set a timeline for his resignation. <\/p>\n<p>15. Ian Byrne<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Byrne said the PM must set a timeline for his departure. <\/p>\n<p>16. Apsana Begum <\/p>\n<p>In a statement on X, Begum said the party must change \u201cboth leadership and policy\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>17. Neil Duncan-Jordan <\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Duncan-Jordan said: \u201cWe promised to do politics differently, but everything now looks tainted and grubby. All those responsible must seriously consider their positions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>18. Chris Hinchliff <\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Hinchliff called on the PM to resign. <\/p>\n<p>19. Kim Johnson<\/p>\n<p>Johnson told LBC: \u201c\u201cI personally don\u2019t think think Keir will be leading us into the next election. Who will that person be? We don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>20. Ruth Jones<\/p>\n<p>Jones told Times Radio: \u201cI think the Prime Minister should consider his position.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>21. Andy McDonald <\/p>\n<p>McDonald said in a statement: \u201cWe need a change of leader tied to change of policy \u2013 for a radical economic vision, with better incomes and higher living standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>22. Kate Osborne<\/p>\n<p>Osborne said in a post on social media: \u201cKeir needs to resign\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>23. Jon Trickett<\/p>\n<p>Trickett told the BBC: \u201cThe message from my constituency is that it\u2019s curtains for Keir.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>24. Nadia Whittome <\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Whittome said: \u201cI believe the Prime Minister should announce a timetable for his departure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>25. Clive Betts <\/p>\n<p>Betts said the public have \u201cstopped listening\u201d to Starmer and called on him to resign. <\/p>\n<p>26. Catherine West <\/p>\n<p>West said in a post on social media: \u201cKeir should outline his intention to resign as Prime Minister and oversee an orderly transition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>27. Beccy Cooper<\/p>\n<p>Cooper \u2013 one of the co-chairs of the soft-left Tribune group \u2013 re-tweeted Louise Haigh\u2019s comments that Starmer cannot lead Labour into the next election. <\/p>\n<p>28. Barry Gardiner<\/p>\n<p>Gardiner told GB News that Starmer should step down, adding: \u201cLeadership brings with it responsibilities, and this defeat is Keir Starmer\u2019s responsibility.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>29. Abtisam Mohamed<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Abtisam_Mohamed\/status\/2052851266569560309?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a statement,<\/a> Mohamed called on Starmer to agree to a clear transition and timetable for his departure. <\/p>\n<p>30. Tony Vaughan <\/p>\n<p>Vaughan, a vocal critic of the government\u2019s immigration policy, has said there should be \u201can orderly transition of leadership well before the local elections next year\u201d. In <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/tonyvaughanMP\/status\/2053046592618274983?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a social media post<\/a>, he said: \u201cLabour needs a second term to renew this country after years of Tory failure. On the current trajectory, we won\u2019t get there because we will lose, and Farage will win.
