{"id":576484,"date":"2026-05-10T14:03:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-10T14:03:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/576484\/"},"modified":"2026-05-10T14:03:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-10T14:03:09","slug":"farage-trying-to-avoid-scrutiny-over-5m-gift-from-crypto-billionaire-labour-says-nigel-farage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/576484\/","title":{"rendered":"Farage trying to avoid scrutiny over \u00a35m gift from crypto billionaire, Labour says | Nigel Farage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Labour has accused <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/nigel-farage\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nigel Farage<\/a> of attempting to dodge scrutiny as the Reform leader continued to face questions over the \u00a35m gift he received from a crypto billionaire shortly before the last general election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Asked about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/apr\/25\/christopher-harborne-mystery-billionaire-bankrolling-reform-uk-nigel-farage\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the gift from Christopher Harborne<\/a> on Sunday, the party\u2019s deputy leader, Richard Tice, sought to present it as an irrelevance to voters and said it had complied with all the rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">When questioned about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/apr\/29\/revealed-nigel-farage-was-given-undisclosed-5m-by-crypto-billionaire-in-2024\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Guardian\u2019s revelation of the gift<\/a>, which Farage had not disclosed, Tice insisted it had been a personal gift that did not need to be declared.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cNigel was not involved in politics at the time. He\u2019s complied with all the laws,\u201d Tice told the BBC\u2019s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI trust Nigel\u2019s judgment, and he\u2019s complied with the rules, and thank heavens a wonderful person who\u2019s given that gift is utterly determined to keep Nigel safe and secure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/labour\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Labour<\/a> party chair, Anna Turley, said there were serious questions still to be answered about the money, which Farage received shortly before announcing he would stand in the 2024 general election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOnce again, Farage and his MPs clearly believe there\u2019s one rule for them and another for everyone else,\u201d she said. \u201cHe didn\u2019t just take the cash and fail to declare it. He announced a crypto tax cut policy that would directly benefit his secret donor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Reform UK gained more than 1,400 councillors across England in this week\u2019s local elections, came second in the Welsh parliament elections and joint second with Labour in Scotland. Farage hailed the results a \u201chistoric shift in British politics\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Electoral Commission is expected to announce in the coming days whether it will launch a formal investigation into Farage\u2019s \u00a35m gift and if it breached electoral law, with the potential to impose a fine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Tice said voters knew about the gift and had still chosen to endorse the party, which made sweeping gains across the country in Thursday\u2019s elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe reality is, voters have been made aware of this and then said we want more Nigel, we want more Reform leadership, more Reform councils,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Tice also said claimed \u201cmillions of British voters were enormously grateful\u201d for the money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cFrankly, \u00a35m is probably not enough,\u201d he said. \u201cThe dangers to his life grow. It\u2019s absolutely vital we keep Nigel safe. The state wouldn\u2019t provide the funding, and this was a personal gift based around safety and security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He also said the media were trying to smear the party by asking questions about the gift. \u201cThe problem that we have is an establishment media that is going to try anything all the time to do us down,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Multimillionaire Tice has faced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2026\/apr\/19\/reform-uk-richard-tice-corporation-tax\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">allegations that he failed to pay almost \u00a3100,000 in corporation tax<\/a> to the benefit of his investment company, which in turn made donations to Reform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The parliamentary commissioner for standards could consider whether Farage\u2019s \u00a35m gift was a breach of MPs\u2019 code of conduct.
