Casualty spoilers follow.

Casualty’s current boxset, ‘Lethal Legacy’, is exploring the military past of clinical lead Flynn Byron. He was recently reunited with his former Army leader Colonel Jack Bard – and it quickly became clear that the pair have a rather chequered history.

Since he arrived in the ED last year, it was teased that Flynn is haunted by his days as a medic in the military, but for the most part he has been keen to move forward while focusing on making a success of his new role.

However, there have been various clues that hinted towards darker times as his past threatened to rise to the surface. In his very first episode, his secret lover Amber asked him if it was still on his mind, and suggested that he recently saw someone die.

Then, in an episode during previous boxset ‘Learning Curve’, Flynn reunited with Dr Grace Clements, a friend from his time at the Ministry of Defence, who arranged a training exercise for Matty and Kim.

Grace suggested that they should get the squad back together, before posing a similar question to Amber and asking Flynn if he “still thinks about him” – to which Flynn replied that he does “every day”.

These breadcrumbs have alluded to a much bigger story, and this has finally come to fruition when Bard, played by former Emmerdale star Mark Womack, walked into the ED at the start of this boxset.

Flynn was immediately spooked when he came face to face with his former commanding officer, who had come to provide military aid when the staff at Holby thought they were facing a new pandemic.

After praising nurse Cam for his hard work, Bard then slated him to Flynn, saying: “You need to toughen up your men, Byron. That lad wouldn’t last a day in my unit. Weak links like him let the side down. You know, I always knew you didn’t have it in you.”

We learned more about Flynn and Bard’s fractious relationship in tonight’s dramatic episode, when a chemical explosion at the Wyvern Hill Estate left one of Bard’s soldiers seriously injured.

He was taken to the ED for treatment, but when the soldier was examined, some historic bruising around his kidney was discovered. Crucially, these marks couldn’t have been caused by the explosion.

This sent alarm bells ringing for Flynn, so he decided to question fellow soldier Rory about how his colleague might have got those bruises. As Rory was pushed for answers, Bard intervened and immediately dismissed his soldier from the conversation.

After shutting down Flynn’s investigation, Bard gave the clinical lead some rare praise, saying: “Your team did well today, Byron. No deadwood.” Flynn replied that a figure named Adam wasn’t “deadwood”, but Bard claimed to not know who he was referring to.

Flynn didn’t buy any of Bard’s words, and it appears that Adam is at the forefront of Flynn’s mind – could he be the mysterious person who Grace was referring to earlier this year? But just who is Adam? And why has it left a such a mark on Flynn?

We’ll have to wait a little while to find out, as the medical drama is taking a break next week due to the Eurovision Song Contest airing on BBC One. Either way, it might not be too much longer before we get some concrete answers to these big questions…
