{"id":577362,"date":"2026-05-11T02:36:07","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T02:36:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/577362\/"},"modified":"2026-05-11T02:36:07","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T02:36:07","slug":"the-worst-spring-drought-on-record-is-putting-u-s-crops-at-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/577362\/","title":{"rendered":"The Worst Spring Drought on Record Is Putting U.S. Crops at Risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color dropcap text-left\">The United States experienced its worst spring <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7357444\/water-business-issue-of-decade\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">drought<\/a> on record last month, with more than 60% of land in the lower 48 states experiencing moderate drought or worse.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/03\/26\/spring-us-heat-wave-climate-change\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">drought<\/a> has sparked alarm among farmers and environmentalists across the country, who warn that food supplies may be impacted and wildfires may blight areas where they are not usually seen.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">The dry conditions are concentrated in the southeast, where moderate to exceptional drought covered <a href=\"https:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/DmData\/DataTables.aspx\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">99.81%<\/a> of the region at its peak in April, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/CurrentMap.aspx\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">U.S. Drought Monitor<\/a>. Severe to exceptional drought covered more than 80% of the region, the highest level in April since the monitor began collecting data in 2000.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">The drought has been building for some time. Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina experienced record dry conditions between September 2025 and March 2026, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drought.gov\/drought-status-updates\/drought-status-update-southeast-2026-04-16\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">records<\/a> dating back to 1895.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">While heavy rainfall in the South last week eased conditions in the Deep South and Texas, the U.S. Drought Monitor <a href=\"https:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/services\/data\/summary\/html\/usdm_summary_20260505.html\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a> that \u201cdrought conditions remained mostly unchanged across southeastern Alabama, Georgia and northwestern Florida, where soil moisture and streamflows remain extremely low.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/news\/national-climate-202603\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">found<\/a> that January through March was the driest on record for the continental U.S., with precipitation overall less than 70% of average, and these dry conditions have expanded to nearly the largest extent of drought since November 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Major crops at risk\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">The drought is threatening to have a severe impact on <a href=\"https:\/\/agindrought.unl.edu\/Maps.aspx\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">major agricultural crops<\/a>, from wheat farmers in Kansas to vegetable farmers in Georgia.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">The poor conditions and low yields come at a time when farmers are already struggling due to tariffs and the rising cost of fertilizer resulting from the war in Iran.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">&#8220;We had to stop planting because it&#8217;s so dry,&#8221; Bain said, adding that the costs of his farm have gone up in the wake of the fuel crisis sparked by the Iran war. &#8220;It&#8217;s very costly per day, especially when you are looking at diesel fuel prices at $4 for off-road, over $5 on road, so just another cost when you have dry weather.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">For wheat farmers across the Great Plains, those late April to early May weeks are critical as winter wheat begins to mature before the summer harvest. Yet, the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/topics\/crops\/wheat\/market-outlook\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Department of Agriculture<\/a> (USDA) forecast that this year\u2019s wheat acreage will be the lowest since 1919.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Rachel Cleetus, senior policy director with the Climate and Energy Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists, wrote<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ucs.org\/rachel-cleetus\/widespread-record-us-drought-threatens-rural-livelihoods-and-food-affordability\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> last week<\/a> that climate change was \u201cfundamentally altering conditions for U.S. agriculture, creating unprecedented risks and uncertainties for livelihoods of farmers and ranchers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Those conditions could raise food prices for consumers, she added.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Wildfires in the wetlands\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">The dry conditions have also fueled wildfires, even in wetland environments like the South Florida Everglades. These wildfires have already burned 120,000 acres of land in Florida this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/drought-parches-florida\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">and according to NASA<\/a>, the \u201ccurrent drought is the most widespread and severe to affect the state since 2012.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">&#8220;Florida has got one of the worst fire seasons in maybe the last 30 or 40 years, or it&#8217;s turning out to be that way,&#8221; Florida Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Nt4ETqndGEs\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told CBS<\/a> in late April.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">In Georgia, Gov. Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency in 91 counties in <a href=\"https:\/\/gov.georgia.gov\/press-releases\/2026-04-22\/gov-kemp-declares-state-emergency-response-south-georgia-wildfires\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">late April<\/a> as wildfires burned across the southeast of the state, allowing the state National Guard to respond to affected areas.
