{"id":579002,"date":"2026-05-12T00:42:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T00:42:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/579002\/"},"modified":"2026-05-12T00:42:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T00:42:10","slug":"uk-leader-starmer-fights-to-save-premiership-as-scores-of-labour-lawmakers-urge-him-to-resign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/579002\/","title":{"rendered":"UK leader Starmer fights to save premiership as scores of Labour lawmakers urge him to resign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>      London\u00a0\u2014\u00a0\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1s62j8001w2dq97w0n70wt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Britain\u2019s Prime Minister Keir Starmer is fighting to keep his job after his appeal for a \u201creset,\u201d following disastrous results in last week\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2026\/05\/08\/uk\/uk-local-election-reform-farage-starmer-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">local elections<\/a>, was met with scores of lawmakers in his governing Labour Party calling for him to quit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1sf5h000053b6r5n5c8uz9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In a speech to the Labour faithful in London, Starmer said he took responsibility for the heavy losses in councils across England and in elections for the Welsh and Scottish parliaments. But he vowed to stay in his job, saying a change in leadership would plunge Britain into the \u201cchaos\u201d that flourished under the Conservative Party, which ousted two leaders in the two years before Starmer took office.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1sf7iu00083b6rl1ka5qjz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhat we witnessed with the last government was the chaos of constantly changing leaders, and it cost this country a huge amount,\u201d Starmer said Monday morning. \u201cA Labour government would never be forgiven for inflicting that on our country again.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1sf7iu00093b6ryvgicci8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet by Monday evening, the Labour Party appeared to be on the brink of doing just that. More than 70 Labour Members of Parliament (MPs) have publicly urged Starmer to resign as prime minister or set out a timetable for his departure, while several have quit as ministerial aides. If Starmer chooses to step aside, or is ousted, his successor would become Britain\u2019s seventh prime minister in a decade.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1sf7iu000a3b6rfv1qnquz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite winning a landslide election in 2024, the British public soured on Starmer almost as soon as he took office. Attacked from the right over his perceived failure to control illegal immigration, from the left over unpopular economic policies \u2013 and by many across the political spectrum over his lack of charisma and political vision \u2013 Starmer\u2019s position had been deteriorating for months.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1sfgjh000c3b6rs3uvklqy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Last week\u2019s local election results \u2013 which saw Labour lose more than 1,400 seats across English councils and control of the Welsh parliament, where it had been the largest party for decades \u2013 appear to have convinced dozens of Labour lawmakers that Starmer is not capable of winning the next general election, due by the summer of 2029.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1sfhh8000e3b6rryviu8cu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Although Starmer has repeatedly vowed to fight on, his party has ways of making him walk. His opponents need 81 signatures \u2013 equivalent to a fifth of Labour\u2019s seats in parliament \u2013 in support of a challenger to trigger a leadership election among the party\u2019s membership.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1sfhh8000f3b6re2qmtep0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Unlike the Conservative Party, however, Labour does not have a history of regicide; the party has never mounted an official challenge against a sitting prime minister. When Tony Blair stepped down as prime minister in 2007, in part due to divisions in the party over the Iraq War, his long-anointed successor, Gordon Brown, was elected unopposed to take over as prime minister and party leader.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1sfhh8000g3b6r6bkg6gd0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This time would likely be messier. It is not clear if any of Starmer\u2019s rivals have the signatures required to mount a challenge, and many of the potential frontrunners are either untested or mired in scandal.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/gettyimages-2219864687.jpg\" alt=\"Angela Rayner, pictured in Downing Street in June 2025, remains tainted by a scandal over property tax.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1sfhh8000h3b6rhohr8d9z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Angela Rayner, the former deputy prime minister who resigned last year over her failure to pay the correct amount of property tax, has not formally announced that she will challenge Starmer as leader, despite being considered a serious contender. In a statement on Sunday, she called on Starmer to \u201cmeet the moment and set out the change our country needs.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1sfhh8000i3b6rbxlnjlgw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In his Monday morning speech, Starmer tried to do that. \u201cLike every prime minister, I have learned a lot in the first two years in the job in terms of the policy changes that our country faces. Incremental changes won\u2019t cut it,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1sfhh8000j3b6rtrgs6mun@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Starmer would not be the first leader to suffer disastrous local election results after two years in office, before winning a second term at the next a general election. The Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher lost more than 1,000 council seats across England in 1981 local elections, before winning in a landslide in the 1983 general election. Blair lost more than 1,000 council seats in 1999, before winning his second landslide in the general election two years later.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1sfhh8000k3b6r9u6o7mu2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But if Starmer was hoping that the promise of more radical change could force this history to repeat itself, the change he promised was far from radical. He promised to move Britain closer to Europe, following years of antagonistic relations over Brexit \u2013 the policy championed by Nigel Farage, the leader of the hard-right Reform UK party that surged in last week\u2019s local elections.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1sfhh8000l3b6rxqj4tdjl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Asked for specifics about his vision for Britain\u2019s relationship to Europe, Starmer said only that he wanted to take a \u201cbig leap forward\u201d at a summit with the European Union this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1sfhh8000m3b6rzs6sfzeu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For many Labour MPs, such responses were typical of Starmer\u2019s perceived timidity. As dozens of lawmakers published letters calling on Starmer to step aside, many cited his lack of ambition and clear political vision.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1sfhh8000n3b6r23wtl49c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            By late Monday evening, those pressuring Starmer to resign reportedly included members of his cabinet, not just backbenchers. The BBC reported that Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is among a number of cabinet ministers to have urged Starmer to set out a timetable for his resignation.
