A man was arrested on suspicion of making an explosive device amid a major emergency response in Manchester’s Gay Village.<\/p>\n

Emergency crews descended on Canal Street yesterday<\/a> (Monday, May 11) following reports of ‘chemical substances’ being found in a hotel room. Specialist teams searched the room after the smell of the suspected chemicals was initially reported to police by members of the public.<\/p>\n

A large cordon was put in place<\/a> on a stretch of the usually bustling street and the hotel was evacuated. A number of nearby bars and pubs were also evacuated.<\/p>\n

In an update, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police<\/a> said crews ‘examined items’ within the hotel room. Chemical substances found in the room were ‘examined’ and were last night in the ‘process of being safely removed’.<\/p>\n

A man, who was believed to be staying in the room, was detained on suspicion of making an explosive device. He was taken into custody for questioning.<\/p>\n

The GMP spokesperson said the examination of the chemicals ‘ruled out any explosive risk’. Nobody was injured amid the incident.<\/p>\n

In full, GMP’s updated statement said: “The response to the incident on Canal Street in Manchester city centre<\/a> is being reduced following reports of chemical substances being found. Emergency services examined items within a room inside a hotel following calls from the public at about 10:45am.<\/p>\n

“A man, believed to be the occupant of the room, was detained on suspicion of making an explosive device and is currently in custody being questioned. Chemical substances found in the room have been examined and are in the process of being safely removed.<\/p>\n

“The subsequent examination ruled out any explosive risk. We are working with the hotel management to return the establishment to normal after staff and guests were evacuated as a precaution.<\/p>\n

Canal Street was cordoned off between the junctions of Sackville Street and Richmond Street for several hours yesterday. A large number of police officers and firefighters were pictured within the cordon, which was eventually reduced at around 4pm.<\/p>\n
