While last week\u2019s dismal local election results may have been the final straw for many lawmakers in his Labour Party, a series of policy missteps, U-turns and scandal had brought Starmer\u2019s government to breaking point.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp2higbw00053b6r9sgpu5mb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Early in Starmer\u2019s premiership, his government \u2013 seeking to put Britain\u2019s public finances on a more stable footing \u2013 announced that it would cut a universal subsidy to help older people pay their heating bills in winter, and introduce a means-tested system instead.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp2higbw00063b6rkketjsn8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That move caused a huge backlash, as more than 10 million pensioners lost out on payments, worth up to \u00a3300 (about $400), in the winter of 2024. Starmer backtracked the next year, reinstating the subsidy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp2higbw00073b6rypsev81y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The winter fuel payments debacle damaged trust in the leadership\u2019s judgment \u2013 and would have failed to save much money anyway. The government\u2019s credibility took a further hit when it attempted to cut certain disability and sickness-related benefits payments \u2013 which have ballooned since the Covid-19 pandemic \u2013 only for the measures to be blocked by backbench Labour lawmakers in Parliament.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp2higbw00083b6r1czylusd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To Labour\u2019s left-wing voters, the party seemed callous. To financial markets, it seemed unwilling to take tough decisions. Borrowing costs continued to creep up.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp2higbx00093b6rrc7tcxkh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Starmer has also seesawed in his rhetoric and policies on immigration. In the first year of his premiership, he took a tougher line on the issue, partly in an attempt to stop voters jumping to Reform, the hard-right party led by Nigel Farage. But that tactic only served to alienate Labour\u2019s more progressive voters, without halting Reform\u2019s surge in the polls.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp2higbx000a3b6r23qd4kfo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The past several months have been dominated by the fallout from Starmer\u2019s decision to appoint Peter Mandelson as Britain\u2019s ambassador to Washington. Starmer fired Mandelson after just a few months in the role after documents revealed the extent of Mandelson\u2019s ties to the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The appointment deepened doubts about Starmer\u2019s political judgment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp2i3w2i000c3b6rdjgvq23f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Against the backdrop of anemic economic growth, these missteps have brought Starmer\u2019s premiership to the brink. Although supporters of the Prime Minister point out his achievements in bringing down waiting lists for the National Health Service, workers\u2019 rights reforms and rebuilding Britain\u2019s relations with Europe, his poor communication skills mean Labour\u2019s successes can go unnoticed.\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Prime Minister Keir Starmer\u2019s authority has been deteriorating for months.
