St Helens travel to take on Huddersfield Giants on Thursday night in the first game of Super League round 11 and the team news is now in, with Saints having to replace captain Matty Lees.

Lees went down in the first tackle of Saturday’s Challenge Cup clash against Wigan Warriors and Saints have since confirmed that he will undergo surgery today (Tuesday) with it unlikely he returns to the playing field for St Helens this season.

That’s a major blow with Lees the club captain but also their standout forward in a pack that still has a host of players out injured, including off-season NRL signing Jacob Host.

As for Huddersfield, they’ve also lost their captain with the Giants announcing that Adam Clune’s hamstring injury will rule him out for 12-16 weeks, with his earliest return date being August.

Paul Rowley and interim head coach Liam Finn have reacted accordingly and named their 21-man squads for Thursday night’s game.

Huddersfield Giants team news

The Giants have made several changes with Clune an obvious one who drops out but so too does Jacob Douglas with St Helens recalling the winger from his loan period, however, Huddersfield have been able to add Hull KR’s Lee Kershaw on loan.

In total, six changes have been made with Kieran Rush, Archie Sykes, Tanguy Zenon and Connor Wrench all dropping out alongside Clune and Douglas.

There are two major boosts in the forward pack as Matty English and Joe Greenwood return from injury whilst youngsters Logan Blacker and Lewis Jagger are named, as well as loan signings Lee Kershaw and Cole Geyer.

Jack Billington, who had been sent on a season-long loan to Widnes Vikings only last week, is recalled.

St Helens team news

Paul Rowley makes three changes to the squad he named to face Wigan Warriors with Kyle Feldt returning after a failed HIA, Curtis Sironen making his long-awaited return after a calf injury, and young prop Alfie Sinclair earning a call-up amid the injury to Matty Lees.

As well as Lees, Noah Stephens is also out in the pack after the prop failed a HIA against Wigan Warriors whilst centre Nene Macdonald, who was named last week but did not play, also drops out.

Tom Humphreys remains in the squad with George Whitby another spine option for Paul Rowley to consider.

St Helens 21-man squad: Jack Welsby, Kyle Feldt, Harry Robertson, Deon Cross, Tristan Sailor, Jonny Lomax, Alex Walmsley, Daryl Clark, Curtis Sironen, Shane Wright, David Klemmer, George Delaney, Matt Whitley, George Whitby, Lewis Murphy, Joe Shorrocks, Owen Dagnall, Jake Davies, Alfie Sinclair, Tom Humphreys, Jackson Hastings
