{"id":582170,"date":"2026-05-13T18:29:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T18:29:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/582170\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T18:29:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T18:29:08","slug":"giro-ditalia-arrieta-wins-stage-despite-wrong-turn-and-fall-as-eulalio-takes-lead-giro-ditalia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/582170\/","title":{"rendered":"Giro d\u2019Italia: Arrieta wins stage despite wrong turn and fall as Eul\u00e1lio takes lead | Giro d&#8217;Italia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Portugal\u2019s Afonso Eul\u00e1lio seized the overall lead in the Giro d\u2019Italia despite having victory snatched away by Spain\u2019s Igor Arrieta in the final metres of a rain-drenched stage five on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Bahrain Victorious rider joined Arrieta (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) at the front near the summit of the Montagna Grande di Viggiano climb and when Arrieta took a wrong turn he looked certain to take the win. But Arrieta, banging his handlebars in anger, had other ideas and reeled in Eul\u00e1lio along the finishing straight to win his first Grand Tour stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI was completely empty after the hard stage but so was Eul\u00e1lio,\u201d Arrieta said. \u201cI kept pushing and when I got his wheel I knew he couldn\u2019t go faster than me and thought I could win the stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Eul\u00e1lio had looked in control but slid to the tarmac with around 7km of the 203km remaining, allowing Arrieta to catch him. He then appeared to have been gifted the stage when Arrieta went the wrong side of a junction and had to turn around. But Eul\u00e1lio had nothing left in his legs on the final uphill drag and had to settle for second place, although taking the race lead was some consolation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Arrieta had also crashed 13.5km from the end of a cold and wet day that tested the resilience of the peloton. The Italian Giulio Ciccone, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2026\/may\/12\/giro-d-italia-jhonatan-narvaez-wins-stage-four-giulio-ciccone-in-pink\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who had begun the stage in the pink jersey<\/a>, finished seven minutes back in the main group and slipped down to sixth overall. Eul\u00e1lio now leads the general classification standings by 2min 51sec from Arrieta.
