{"id":583074,"date":"2026-05-14T06:26:19","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T06:26:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/583074\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T06:26:19","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T06:26:19","slug":"teesside-hospice-and-butterwick-hospice-announce-merger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/583074\/","title":{"rendered":"Teesside Hospice and Butterwick Hospice announce merger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Teesside Hospice, in Middlesbrough, and Butterwick Hospice, in Stockton, plan to unite in a bid to ensure \u201clong-term sustainability\u201d of end-of-life care across the North East.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The decision, which has been agreed in principle, comes as hospices across the country remain at crisis point <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenorthernecho.co.uk\/news\/25945329.hospices-say-action-needed-cliff-edge-funding-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">with finances running low and services at risk of being cut.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Both hospices continue to face \u201cunending\u201d financial challenges, spending more money than they are bringing in at a time when demand is increasing year on year.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Both Teesside and Butterwick now feel that they can generate more income together, with no immediate noticeable changes to services.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  While the hospices will now jointly support more than 6,700 people across Teesside and County Durham, the merger has meant that two Butterwick staff now sadly face redundancy.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cBy making these decisions now, we are protecting ourselves for the future\u201d, Mike Thornicroft, CEO of Teesside Hospice, told The Northern Echo.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>(Image: SARAH CALDECOTT)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cWe would always want to reach more people and deliver outstanding care. Demand is going up year on year, and we want to do more for more people.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cI think by working together we can share costs, we can bring more income in, and each hospice is protected by the other one&#8217;s success.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Edward Gorringe, CEO at Butterwick Hospice, said the two hospices are \u201cstronger together\u201d.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThey can better serve communities in the future\u201d, he said. \u201cWe have got strengths in different areas at each hospice. We can hopefully create something taking the best elements of each.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>  Both hospices &#8216;under pressure&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>\n  The merger, which follows a lengthy decision process, has been agreed to ensure services for those living with life-limiting illnesses and their families will continue.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Mr Gorringe, who has been in his role since 2022, said all North East hospices have been working together for years.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In the last few months, the merger came about as an &#8220;opportunity to build something special\u201d.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>(Image: SARAH CALDECOTT)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  It comes just less than two years after Mr Gorringe revealed that, without additional funding, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenorthernecho.co.uk\/news\/24644840.north-east-hospices-crisis-point-facing-uncertain-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the hospice\u2019s current provision would \u201csimply become unsustainable\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Mr Gorringe said: \u201cAt some point in time, we could have [a financial challenge] that we cannot cope with. It could be anywhere between two months to a year from now.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cWe are all under pressure with costs going up.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cFor the whole sector, the hospice&#8217;s funding model is based on a simple approach to providing care. But we are akin to a small hospital &#8211; and the funding model does not sustain that.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>(Image: SARAH CALDECOTT)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  However, Mr Gorringe did say that the hospice has made significant progress, recently reducing a \u00a31 million deficit by around half.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThe government needs to take these issues seriously\u201d, he argued. \u201cThey need to wake up and take it seriously because if they don\u2019t they will lose hospices.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Meanwhile, Mr Thornicroft, who has worked in the sector for eight years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenorthernecho.co.uk\/news\/25945329.hospices-say-action-needed-cliff-edge-funding-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said finances had been tough this year due to National Living Wage and National Insurance Contribution increases.\u00a0<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He previously said difficult decisions could lie ahead for Teesside Hospice, which faced a deficit of around \u00a3300,000 last year &#8211; but there are plans in place to tackle the next forecasted deficit.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He said he hopes the merger will bring the potential for new roles within the hospices &#8211; but, with the ongoing crisis, cannot guarantee there won\u2019t be cuts in the future.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>(Image: SARAH CALDECOTT)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cI think both Teesside Hospice and Butterwick Hospice over the last few years have been delivering expert care to our communities\u201d, Mr Thornicroft said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cWe both face challenges around financial sustainability, and we have both been experiencing a deficit budget. Over the last few years we have been eating into our resources.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cIt just makes sense to work together and be stronger together rather than competing for funding in our local areas.
