Rumoured for years, 2026 is expected to be the year Apple finally launches its first folding phone<\/a>, taking on rivals like Samsung<\/a> and Google. Predicted to be called the iPhone Ultra, the long-awaited foldable is expected to debut in a range of new colours, according to the latest leaks. <\/p>\n

The iPhone Ultra will reportedly be the first major product launch under new chief executive John Ternus<\/a>, who could lead a completely new era for the iPhone. The iPhone Ultra is expected to feature a book-style design that opens out into a tablet-like display, with Apple apparently focusing heavily on reducing or eliminating the crease entirely. <\/p>\n

September won\u2019t just be the start for Ternus, but also a strategy shift for Apple itself. The company will reportedly punt the regular iPhone 18 to spring 2027 for the first time, with Apple reserving its September keynote purely for the iPhone Ultra, and the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max<\/a>. Here\u2019s everything I know so far about the upcoming foldable, from price and release date to design, camera and specs.<\/p>\n

Latest Apple iPhone Fold rumours <\/p>\n

On 1 May, Macworld revealed the reported colourways for the upcoming iPhone Fold. And it might be disappointing for those who like a pop of colour. Apparently, it the iPhone Ultra will only come in two colours \u2013 a silver and white, as well as an indigo, which reportedly looks similar to the iPhone 17 Pro\u2019s deep blue. Macworld created a mock-up of the indigo iPhone Fold below. <\/p>\n

Apple has reportedly been working on a foldable smartphone for years. In January 2021, Bloomberg\u2019s Mark Gurman reported<\/a> that the tech giant had begun early work on a foldable iPhone and was already testing prototype foldable displays internally.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve been waiting for it to launch ever since. In 2021, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo speculated<\/a> the folding iPhone could launch as early as 2024. Evidently, that never happened. Due to the challenges in manufacturing a foldable iPhone without a crease, there have been delays, leading Kuo to suggest last year<\/a> that it would launch in 2026 instead. <\/p>\n

Bloomberg\u2019s Mark Gurman gave us a better idea of this potential launch strategy in late 2025. He stated that Apple would move<\/a> towards a more spread-out launch window from September 2026, only launching the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max here, as well as the all-new iPhone Fold. <\/p>\n

But in March 2026, Barclays analyst Tim Long claimed<\/a> in a research note that, while the iPhone Fold will launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max in September, it won\u2019t be released until December. Apple has used this strategy in the past, delaying the iPhone X launch until December but keeping the iPhone 8 release in September. <\/p>\n

While a report from Nikkei Asia claimed<\/a> in early April that Apple had faced setbacks during the engineering test phase for the iPhone Fold, potentially delaying the phone even further into 2027, Gurman said on April 7 that it was still on track<\/a> to launch this September.<\/p>\n

Whenever it actually releases, it looks very likely that the iPhone Fold will at least be announced this September, even if shipments could slip to December. I\u2019m expecting the Apple event to take place on Tuesday, 8 September or Wednesday, 9 September, where it\u2019ll unveil the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, alongside the new folding iPhone.<\/p>\n

Apple iPhone Fold price<\/p>\n

It\u2019s difficult to predict the price of an all-new smartphone, but there are a lot of rumours floating around, and it might not be a great sign for your wallet \u2013 the iPhone Fold could be the most expensive iPhone ever.<\/p>\n

In early April, Gurman claimed<\/a> the iPhone Fold could cost more than $2,000 (\u00a31,500). He said that could deter many customers, but should boost the company\u2019s average sales price. In March 2025, Ming Chi-Kuo also speculated<\/a> that the iPhone Fold could cost between $2,000 and $2,500 (\u00a31,850)<\/p>\n

Weibo leaker Instant Digital shared<\/a> the potential storage options and prices for each one in March 2026. According to the insider, the three prices for the different storage options are as follows:<\/p>\n

256GB: $2,320 (\u00a31,720) 512GB: $2,610 (\u00a31,940) 1TB: $2,900 (\u00a32,150) <\/p>\n

While often correct about many things, pricing is the most difficult thing to predict when it comes to anything Apple. Annual price hikes have always been predicted for the regular iPhone range, and more often than not, they don\u2019t come to fruition, so take those ballpark prices with a pinch of salt.<\/p>\n

Apple iPhone Fold name <\/p>\n

While there have been plenty of rumours about the name of Apple\u2019s folding phone, a new report<\/a> from Macworld claims it may be called the iPhone Ultra. On 27 April, the publication said the device would be only the second to carry the Ultra branding, after the high-end Apple Watch Ultra<\/a>. Apple could then expand the name to other devices, with a touchscreen MacBook Ultra tipped for next year, alongside a possible iPad Ultra.<\/p>\n

Apple iPhone Fold design and display <\/p>\n

As mentioned previously, Apple has been tinkering with various folding designs for a while now. One of the options was a clamshell-style folding phone. Like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip line, but according to Ming-Chi Kuo, the tech giant decided<\/a> on a book-style design, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, meaning it\u2019ll open out into a larger tablet when unfolded. <\/p>\n

In March last year, Kuo claimed the foldable iPhone would boast a 7.8in crease-free inner display and a 5.5in outer display. That\u2019s interesting because if Apple goes for a 5.5in display, the cover screen will be much smaller than rival foldables.<\/p>\n

Kuo also said that it\u2019ll have a crease-free design, a difficult feat that no mainstream phone manufacturer has quite achieved yet. The insider also stated that the hinge will combine stainless steel and titanium alloy, while the casing will use titanium alloy only.<\/p>\n

In terms of thickness, Kuo claims it will be between 9 and 9.5mm when folded shut, and 4.5 to 4.8mm thick when unfolded like a tablet. It will, however, only have two cameras on the rear and two front-facing cameras that can be used when folded or unfolded. There reportedly won\u2019t be any room for Face ID, however, with Apple expected to use a Touch ID side button.<\/p>\n

In December 2025, The Information leaked<\/a> more details about the iPhone Fold\u2019s dimensions. According to the outlet, it has a 5.3in display when folded, expanding to 7.7in when unfolded. What\u2019s most intriguing is the aspect ratio, with hints that it\u2019ll be wider than tall. The publication claims it\u2019ll have a 2:3 aspect ratio, expanding to 4:3 when unfolded.<\/p>\n

In March 2026, Apple Track created a realistic-looking concept of what the iPhone Fold might look like based on the latest design leaks. The YouTube channel stated that each display will have its own Dynamic Island. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

In early April 2026, insider Sonny Dickson leaked dummy pictures of what the iPhone Fold will reportedly look like when it launches in September.<\/p>\n

On 16 April, reliable leaker Majin Bu showed off images of what it claimed were the final designs of the iPhone Fold. It shows an almost-square display, with a camera bar that looks similar to the iPhone Air. On 19 April, Bu also leaked the cases, indicating that it will feature MagSafe, so you can charge your phone wirelessly and attach magnetic accessories.<\/p>\n

According to Korean publication The Elec, the iPhone Fold will boast<\/a> two OLED displays that use Samsung Display\u2019s CoE (Color filter on Encapsulation) technology, which has been used on the Galaxy Z Fold series since 2021, which should make the displays more efficient and thinner. <\/p>\n

On 22 April, Vadim Yuryev from the Max Tech YouTube channel shared<\/a> a series of images and videos of dummy units of Apple\u2019s rumoured foldable iPhone. What\u2019s immediately clear is that Apple might not be going tall with its first foldable like Samsung and Google, but opting for something wider and more compact instead, fitting more easily inside a pocket.<\/p>\n

When comparing the iPhone Fold to the iPhone 17 Pro Max in its unfolded state, it appears the foldable is roughly the same width as the Pro Max in landscape but significantly taller. That could make it way better for watching content on the go with a 4:3 aspect ratio. <\/p>\n

It looks absolutely tiny when closed. According to previous leaks, the iPhone Fold could boast similar dimensions to an iPhone 13 mini when shut, with a 5.5in outer display. Yuryev also demonstrated how easy it is to reach across the screen in its folded state, showing it can be used one-handed. You can also see<\/a> the power button on the right, predicted to house a Touch ID sensor, as well as the camera control button. Similar to an iPad mini, the volume buttons can be seen on the top edge.<\/p>\n

Yuryev also compared the iPhone Fold dummy to an 8.3in iPad mini. Barring the mini\u2019s thick bezels, they look roughly the same size, so it could be like having an iPad mini in your pocket. Interestingly, Yuryev\u2019s dummy is 11mm thick, which is different to previous rumours that suggested it could be 9mm thick when closed. <\/p>\n

Apple iPhone Fold cameras <\/p>\n

There isn\u2019t a huge amount of detail about the cameras just yet, but Ming Chi-Kuo stated in 2025 that it will feature a dual lens setup, rather than a triple lens rear. <\/p>\n

In June 2025, Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station claimed<\/a> the dual camera rear setup will feature 48MP, matching the iPhone 17 Pro\u2019s main cameras. <\/p>\n

According to a JP Morgan industry report, seen by MacRumors<\/a>, the iPhone Fold\u2019s outer display (when folded) will feature a 24MP under-screen camera built into the inside display. This would be huge if true, given that many under-display sensors are notoriously bad in terms of picture quality. <\/p>\n

iPhone Fold specs and battery life<\/p>\n

There\u2019s even less information about the iPhone Fold\u2019s specs. According to analyst Jeff Pu, the iPhone Fold will boast<\/a> Apple\u2019s A20 chip, built on TSMC’s 2nm process. It will reportedly be 15 per cent faster and 30 per cent more efficient than the A19. <\/p>\n

In March 2026, Korean outlet The Bell claimed<\/a> the iPhone Fold will feature 12GB of RAM, something supplied by Samsung<\/p>\n

Battery life is expected to be absolutely mammoth, however. A post from a leaker on the Korean Naver blog claimed in November 2025 that it will boast a huge 5,400 to 5,800mAh battery \u2013 the biggest capacity of any iPhone ever.<\/p>\n
