(ABC NSW South East: Jacinta Counihan)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In a statement, the Eurobodalla Shire Council said sand scraping was a temporary emergency measure that was &#8220;assessed and permitted by other agencies before it can proceed&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It said the &#8220;latest beach scraping [September 2025] was not a declared emergency, but the NSW Government agreed to the work, which required 50 per cent funding by council&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Council will continue to investigate avenues for further beach scraping, giving residents time to undertake coastal protection of their own properties, and regularly seek NSW government commitment to continued dredging and sand renourishment of the beach close to shore.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"sandbags on a beach\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/b5713e510bf4be4c9edb52c42c9c2d89.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Sandbags protects a home on Surfside Beach in May 2026. (ABC NSW South East: Jacinta Counihan)<\/p>\n<p>Long-term solution<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Eurobodalla Open Coastal Management Plan (CMP), adopted by the council in 2022, outlined a number of options to manage erosion risk over a 10-year period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">An option suggested for Surfside Beach was sand nourishment during channel dredging in the Clyde River.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In October 2025, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-10-27\/surfside-beach-erosion-repairs-dredging-beach-scraping\/105929262\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105929262\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Transport for NSW conducted channel dredging<\/a> and dumped approximately 30,000 cubic metres of sand 600 metres off Surfside Beach, hoping it would wash ashore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">That process is currently being monitored by the University of New South Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In the CMP report, the strategy was assessed as being moderately to highly effective, but it noted that &#8220;placement of dredge material directly on the beach or marginally offshore (within 100 metres of shoreline) was required to ensure nourishment of the beach is achieved&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"a sand dune on a beach littered with debris and trees\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/6962c2d82570292cf26e782a1c7dfa13.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The dune at Surfside Beach is slowly being washed away each time a large swell comes through the bay.
