{"id":584669,"date":"2026-05-15T02:09:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T02:09:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/584669\/"},"modified":"2026-05-15T02:09:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T02:09:11","slug":"national-gallerys-virtual-tour-grows-from-eight-rooms-to-the-entire-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/584669\/","title":{"rendered":"National Gallery\u2019s virtual tour grows from eight rooms to the entire museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ianvisits.co.uk\/venues\/national-gallery\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Gallery<\/a> is inviting art lovers to take a virtual wander through its galleries from home, having expanded its online tour in partnership with Google Arts &amp; Culture.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/national-gallery-virtual-tour.jpg\" class=\"lightbox\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-89474 leaderimagetop\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/national-gallery-virtual-tour.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1000\" data-eio=\"p\"\/><\/a>Screenshot of the National Gallery Google Arts and Culture Virtual Tour<\/p>\n<p>Previous online tours on the gallery\u2019s website only covered eight rooms, but now every picture room in the gallery can be explored online, offering a Vicarious Visit through the museum\u2019s bicentenary redisplay.<\/p>\n<p>The virtual experience offers two options: a full walkthrough of all the gallery rooms, or a shorter highlights tour curated by staff to recreate the feel of a whistle-stop gallery visit. The seven-room highlights route includes famous works such as Jan van Eyck\u2019s Arnolfini Portrait, Johannes Vermeer\u2019s A Young Woman Standing at a Virginal, and Claude Monet\u2019s The Water-Lily Pond.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors can also zoom into selected paintings using gigapixel imagery on the Google Arts &amp; Culture platform, allowing viewers to inspect brushstrokes and fine details that can often be difficult to see in person.<\/p>\n<p>The virtual tour is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgallery.org.uk\/visiting\/virtual-tours\/google-street-view-virtual-tour\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lawrence Chiles, the gallery\u2019s Head of Digital Services, said the project lets people \u201cwander the Gallery\u2019s rooms in your own time\u201d, whether revisiting favourite paintings or discovering works for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>The idea of digitally wandering through galleries became especially popular during the Covid lockdowns, when physical museums were shut.
