Refereeing standards in Scotland are facing major scrutiny after Celtic’s dramatic win over Motherwell"dailyrecord"

"MOTHERWELL,

OK, so while we’re still clinging on to the edge of sanity, where are we meant to begin with all of this? Or any of it for that matter?

Perhaps, in such exhausting times, it’s better to start with some established facts and take it from there.

Hearts are one game away from winning the title.

Martin O’Neill is within two of leading Celtic to the league and Scottish Cup Double.

Now read that back again.

If the idea of even one of those had been floated when this campaign of chaos was about to kick off, it would have been seen as an early warning sign… a red flag for mental wellbeing.

But both of them? And at the same time?

That would’ve seemed like certifiable stuff, the sort of wide-eyed gibberish treatable only by heavy medication.

Now, let’s throw in the events of Wednesday, which has resulted in Celtic fans falling over one another in an online stampede to defend the integrity, bravery and professional credibility of John Beaton and Andrew Dallas.

That’s when it hits you right between the eyes – there is no way of saving season 2025-26 from itself. No number of interventions can straighten this out, far less make it make any kind of sense.

All we can do is let it play out, in all of its unrepentant lunacy, until it is consigned to the history books as the maddest any of us ever knew.

The irrefutable facts of the matter are already too ridiculous to reason with.

So how on earth does anyone begin picking through the grey bones of the utter mayhem unleashed when Hearts had their right hand on the trophy, only for a former Tynecastle player to swat history away with one unfortunate brush of his left?

This is where it becomes impossible to untangle.

Celtic’s supporters have convinced themselves the man they refer to affectionately as “Brother Beaton” made the only decision he could as soon as he watched a replay of Sam Nicholson’s clearance.

That it was a textbook stonewaller. And that the fact even Beaton pointed to the spot without blinking can be seen as definitive proof he called it correctly.

Grudgingly, perhaps, but correctly nonetheless. And that he did so after receiving instructions of his sidekick inside Clydesdale House, the son of Hugh, who is viewed by sections of the Celtic support with a similar level of suspicion – much of which is attributable to the supposed sins of the father.

Case closed, No more evidence required. That’s the final submission from these hard-core conspiracy nuts.

That’s their angle on it and they will not be budged by as much as an inch, no matter what anyone else might suggest – not even the mild-mannered Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou who felt moved to ask, “What are we doing here?”.

Askou said he was shocked by Beaton’s decision. He can be excused on the basis he’s still relatively new here.

Because the rest of us had been waiting for this moment to arrive. Not because Beaton is some kind of bent copper. Not because the Scottish game is rigged. And not because of conspiracy theories of some widespread secret plot.

No, we knew a controversy of this enormous scale was coming because… why wouldn’t it?

This season was destined to end in uncontained animosity because that’s the environment in which we live.

So, as a consequence, large sections of Hearts fans are now convinced they are the victims of an ingrained west coast bias.

Rangers fans are every bit as foamy mouthed, adamant the Jambos are simply discovering what they have known to be true for more than a decade.

And poor old Askou is walking around in a daze, wondering if the greatest season of his own career is now fated to end without Europe.

The rest of us? Well, we’re left to cling to the belief all any of this offers is proof of a wretched, colour blind incompetence, which continues to embarrass and infuriate all corners of the Scottish game.

This country’s referees and officials are the furthest thing imaginable from the evil geniuses they are accused of being – they’re just frequently inept and often hopelessly so. Another factor ought to be considered where Beaton, in particular, is concerned.

And, ironically, the same sort of complication could have been applied to his boss Willie Collum before he was moved to the safety of an office on Hampden’s sixth floor.

Neither man is corrupt. But both have been placed in almost impossible positions because of deliberate and unfair campaigns to blacken their name with fans of Glasgow’s big two.

Collum was singled out on more than one occasion for ‘special treatment’ from Rangers while in the middle.

When the PR machine inside Ibrox was at its most unruly and vindictive, statements were released which called into question the motivation behind some of Collum’s most erratic decisions.

The unwritten subtext? That Collum’s day job was teaching religious education at a Catholic school and, as such, that made him a man who could not be trusted while carrying out his side hustle.

Or, at least, not by Rangers fans at any rate. It was a nasty, classless smear campaign.

"Head

Head of Refereeing Willie Collum (Image: SNS Group / SFA)

And Beaton has been on the wrong end of similar attempts at character assassination from Celtic fans who, for years, have had him down as a beer-swilling, Rangers-supporting diehard with a shady masonic handshake.

This suspicion was at least partly endorsed by none less than Brendan Rodgers and when he opened fire on Beaton, it was arguably the most dubious and regrettable misstep of his two stints in Glasgow. Of all people, Rodgers ought to have known better.

And given these shadowy circumstances, Beaton may have felt like he had no choice but to point to the spot from the moment Dallas called him to the screen at Fir Park.

Effectively, he was thrown under a double decker of a bus by his video assistant and left in an almost impossible place.

Award the penalty and have his professional credibility blown apart by everyone from Gary Lineker to Jeff Stelling.

Or stick to his guns, wave play on and walk back into a world of pain and potentially police protection, as was required after he infuriated Rodgers for the first time in an Old Firm derby in 2019.

He’d simply not be human if the thought of all potential consequences did not flash through his mind as he jogged towards the sidelines with Dallas barking in his ear.

Collum, of course, should know how it feels to be placed in such a compromising position, having been there.

He, of all people, must have a duty of care to his own employee. If Beaton’s better judgment – and Collum’s for that matter – is being clouded and manipulated by these external influences, perhaps it’s time for them both to be removed from the firing line for their own peace of mind.

Refereeing standards in Scotland are facing major scrutiny after Celtic’s dramatic win over Motherwell 20:46, 14 May 2026…

[33
2817,218,9531,80483,68014,30905,22802,8934,29529,8058,101,56,54,55,50535,87431
post-584781","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-football","tag-celtic-fc","tag-football","tag-hearts-fc","tag-jens-berthel-askou","tag-john-beaton","tag-martin-oneill","tag-motherwell-fc","tag-premium","tag-scottish-cup","tag-scottish-premiership","tag-sports","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom","tag-var","tag-willie-collum
["GET
