Researchers found that arts and cultural engagement had a comparable association with slowing certain biological aging clocks to that of physical activity. <\/p>\n<p>Unlike chronological age, which simply refers to how long you\u2019ve been alive, biological age refers to how fast your cells, tissues, and organs are aging, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/biological-age\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Cleveland Clinic\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a060db0e4b0ee716970f6b5\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/biological-age\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese results demonstrate the health impact of the arts at a biological level,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.ucl.ac.uk\/44526-daisy-fancourt\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Daisy Fancourt\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a060db0e4b0ee716970f6b5\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/profiles.ucl.ac.uk\/44526-daisy-fancourt\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Daisy Fancourt<\/a>, a lead author of the study and professor of psychobiology &amp; epidemiology at University College London <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2026\/may\/12\/arts-cultural-engagement-linked-slower-pace-biological-ageing-ucl-research\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"told The Guardian\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a060db0e4b0ee716970f6b5\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2026\/may\/12\/arts-cultural-engagement-linked-slower-pace-biological-ageing-ucl-research\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told The Guardian<\/a>. \u201cThey provide evidence for arts and cultural engagement to be recognized as a health-promoting behavior in a similar way to exercise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The researchers measured the volunteers\u2019 engagement in arts and culture by using a survey to determine if they had participated in any of the four following activities in 12 months: participatory arts (singing, dancing, painting, crafting, photographing), receptive arts (attending art exhibitions), visiting heritage sites (historic parks, historic buildings, monuments) or engaging in other cultural activities (museums, libraries or archives). <\/p>\n<p>Engagement in arts and culture was also evaluated by the frequency and diversity of activities. The study noted that the diversity of activities was just as important as the frequency of engagement. The findings were stronger for the adults aged 40 and above, the study states. <\/p>\n<p>The authors pointed out several of the study\u2019s limitations. For starters, the participants were asked to self-report their engagement in arts and culture, which could introduce bias. <\/p>\n<p>Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/le.ac.uk\/people\/eamonn-mallon\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Eamonn Mallon\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a060db0e4b0ee716970f6b5\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/le.ac.uk\/people\/eamonn-mallon\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Eamonn Mallon<\/a>, professor of evolutionary biology at the study entails \u201ccarefully conducted\u201d research, it\u2019s \u201cpossible that people who are biologically younger for their chronological age are simply more likely to get out and do the health impact of the arts.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Arts activities have been \u201cshown to reduce stress, lower inflammation and <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10796774\/#sec13\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"improve cardiovascular \" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a060db0e4b0ee716970f6b5\" said. <\/p>\n<p>Researchers have emphasized that engaging in hobbies and mentally stimulating activities in adulthood could have many positive health benefits \u2014 including benefits to your cognitive health. <\/p>\n<p>A study published in 2025 found that older adults who regularly listened to or played music <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/listening-to-music-every-day-lower-dementia-risk_l_69308b68e4b02cf3b175c7b6\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"had a lower risk of developing dementia\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a060db0e4b0ee716970f6b5\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"69308b68e4b02cf3b175c7b6\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\"
