Nicki Minaj has shared the reasons behind her embrace of MAGA politics<\/a>, citing frustrations with former president Barack Obama and his friendship with rapper Jay-Z as a catalyst for her increasingly right-wing views<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Trinidadian rapper, 43, who publicly declared herself Donald Trump\u2019s \u201cnumber one fan\u201d in January<\/a>, has said she\u2019s leaned more conservative for a while. <\/p>\n

In a wide-ranging interview with Time<\/a> magazine, Minaj shared the root of her political conversion. She explained that during Obama\u2019s time in office, there seemed to be an unspoken expectation that Black entertainers would automatically support the Democratic Party. <\/p>\n

Adding to the \u201cStarships\u201d artist\u2019s disapproval of Obama was his friendship with Jay-Z, with whom Minaj has a long-standing rivalry over allegations that he tried to sabotage her career through his entertainment company Roc Nation\u2019s power monopoly in the industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cJay-Z ended up costing Obama a lot, whether he knows it or not,\u201d Minaj said, claiming, \u201cLots of rappers don\u2019t like Jay-Z and were afraid to say it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Independent has contacted representatives for Obama and Jay-Z for comment. <\/p>\n

Minaj further referenced a 2024 speech Obama delivered on the campaign trail for Kamala Harris, in which he suggested that some Black male voters were uncomfortable with the idea of putting a woman in power. <\/p>\n

\u201cI just saw so many videos of Black men saying that they didn\u2019t like the way they felt about that speech that Obama gave,\u201d the Grammy-winning artist said. \u201cThey felt like they weren\u2019t being listened to.\u201d <\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the interview, she revealed that she had felt pro-Trump for some time, but \u201cdidn\u2019t dare act like that publicly\u201d for fear of alienating fans. \u201cIt\u2019s been ingrained in everyone\u2019s brain in the music business that we are supposed to be a Democratic family,\u201d she said. \u201cI just knew they would not like me supporting Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, since coming out in full support of Trump\u2019s agenda, Minaj said she\u2019s \u201cnever felt happier.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never felt better,\u201d she added. \u201cWhen you can be yourself, you\u2019re happier.\u201d<\/p>\n

Minaj\u2019s outspoken support for the president in recent months has surprised many of her fans. She previously addressed the reason behind her backing of Trump on an episode of The Katie Miller Podcast in February<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I saw how he was being treated over and over and over, I just couldn’t handle it,\u201d she said. \u201cI felt that…a lot of that bullying, and the smear campaigns and all of the lying, I felt that that had been done to me for so many years.<\/p>\n
