AI will be in the majority of premium smartphones and wearables within a
\nfew years – bad news for anyone who doesn’t like or trust the overhyped pixie dust.<\/p>\n
Counterpoint Research forecasts that more than\u00a080
\npercent of premium smartphones will have\u00a0agentic AI capabilities\u00a0by
\n2027, while a similar proportion of so-called wearable devices are on track to be AI-enabled by 2032.<\/p>\n
To some degree, this appears to be a push from the vendors,
\nwho see AI as a “premium” feature to justify the inflating price tag attached
\nto devices. <\/p>\n
Counterpoint says that MediaTek\u00a0became the first
\nchipset maker to commercialize agentic AI capabilities via its Dimensity 9400
\nseries, followed by Qualcomm with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and Snapdragon 8
\nGen 5 platforms. <\/p>\n
This marked the start of a new smartphone\u00a0technology\u00a0cycle\u00a0in
\nwhich devices increasingly shifted from sporting AI assistants to boasting “autonomous,\u00a0context-aware
\nAI experiences,” Counterpoint claims.<\/p>\n
It defines an agentic AI smartphone as one capable of
\nrunning software agents that can understand context, plan actions, make
\ndecisions, and execute multi-step tasks\u00a0on behalf of the user.\u00a0<\/p>\n
This places more emphasis on memory bandwidth and sustained
\nAI throughput rather than just having a neural processing unit (NPU) to boost processing, hence the appearance of newer silicon designed with agentic AI in
\nmind.<\/p>\n
