Representing the UK this year is one of the Eurovision’s most unconventional acts yet: Look Mum No Computer. The electronic musician \u2013 whose real name is Sam Bartle, while he also responds to the stage name Sam Battle \u2013 performed his song Eins, Zwei, Drei during Thursday’s (14 May) live semi-final ahead of Saturday’s main event. It’s there that he will face the difficult task of securing the UK its first Eurovision victory since 1997. <\/p>\n

Related: Best streaming services<\/a><\/p>\n But while Eurovision audiences are only just discovering him, Sam has already spent years building a cult following online thanks to his bizarre musical inventions and experimental performances. Before becoming known as Look Mum No Computer, Sam first launched his YouTube career back in 2013. Initially, the channel focused on his alternative band ZIBRA, which he formed with three friends before the group eventually split in 2016. <\/p>\n Even after the band broke up, Sam continued to experiment with music in increasingly unusual ways. His only popularity exploded after he began building homemade electronic instruments using recycled technology, toys and discarded gadgets. Over the years, he’s become particularly known for creating bizarre functioning synthesisers out of unlikely objects. Among his most famous inventions are synthesisers made entirely from vintage Game Boy consoles and another created using Furby toys. This approach quickly became his trademark. <\/p>\n BBC<\/p>\n “People seemed to react to it,” he told Engadget<\/a> in 2019. “It spurred me on a bit (and showed) that maybe there was another avenue that I could take that was more about my real love for (musical) junk and building things.” His eccentric style eventually transformed him into a major figure within online electronic music communities. Speaking to the BBC<\/a> ahead of his first performance, Sam revealed the inspiration behind Eins, Zwein, Drei came from something surprisingly mundane: moving a sofa to make room for one of his synthesisers. But despite years of Internet fame, Sam admitted he never seriously believed the BBC would actually select hime for Eurovision. <\/p>\n “Around a year ago, my manager and I contacted the BBC. We were like, \u2018Wouldn\u2019t it be funny if we tried to go for Eurovision?\u2019 But we didn\u2019t think it was possible,” he shared. “They said to give it a go, just try and write something. Skip forward to January, I found out. I was flabbergasted.”<\/p>\n Related: Best LEGO sets<\/a><\/p>\n Sam also revealed the BBC prepared him extensively for the pressure and scrutiny that comes with representing the UK at the Eurovision – something previous contestants have often struggled with due to the contest’s intense public attention. “They gave me a stress test (to see) whether I could deal under pressure,” Sam said. “It\u2019s nothing, really, just making sure that you don\u2019t get too nervous and things like that.”<\/p>\n For the Lincolnshire-born musician, the experience is surreal. “I find it completely bonkers to be jumping on this wonderful and wild journey,” he said. “I have always been a massive Eurovision fan, and I love the magical joy it brings to millions of people every year.”<\/p>\n Away from the limelight, Sam’s life has also changed dramatically in recent weeks. The 37-year-old recently welcomed his first child, Max, and shared the personal milestone with followers online just weeks before taking to Europe’s biggest stage.
