Rene Mati\u0107 has been awarded the \u00a330,000 Deutsche B\u00f6rse Photography Foundation Prize for their exhibition AS OPPOSED TO THE TRUTH, which took place at CCA Berlin from 8 November 2024 to 15 February 2025. The artist was selected from a shortlist of four<\/a> including Jane Evelyn Atwood, Weronika G\u0119sicka and Amak Mahmoodian, who will each receive \u00a35,000.<\/p>\n

Mati\u0107<\/a> is a London-based artist and writer working across photography, film, installation and sound to explore ideas of identity, intimacy, race, gender and belonging. Through installations combining documentary photography and snapshots of everyday life, they bring out buried tensions and paradoxes. Their recent exhibitions include the 2025 Turner Prize, Cartrwright Hall Art Gallery, Bradford; \u00a0AS OPPOSED TO THE TRUTH, CCA Berlin, Berlin, 2024\u201325; Rene Mati\u0107\/Oscar Murillo JAZZ, Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, 2024; a girl for the living room, Martin Parr Foundation, Bristol, 2023; and upon this rock, South London Gallery, London, 2022.<\/p>\n

Mati\u0107\u2019s photography \u2018captures everyday life with tenderness and intimacy\u2019, said Anne-Marie Beckmann, director of the Deutsche B\u00f6rse Photography Foundation and member of the jury, in a statement. \u2018The importance of chosen family and community shines through. Rene\u2019s photographs celebrate the togetherness of people \u2013 whether they are laughing, kissing or partying.\u2019<\/p>\n

Founded in 1996, the Deutsche B\u00f6rse Photography Foundation Prize rewards artists and their projects for \u2018having made the most significant contribution to international contemporary photography in Europe over the past 12 months.\u2019<\/p>\n

Rene Mati\u0107\u2019s work, alongside that of all shortlisted artists, is on view at the Photographers\u2019 Gallery, London, through 7 June<\/a>.<\/p>\n
