It happens automatically, a fraction of a second before anything else moves. Your brain is supposed to stay perfectly still through all of that.<\/p>\n<p>New research says it doesn\u2019t. Scientists tracking the brain inside the skull found it slides forward \u2013 not from the impact of walking, not from breathing, not from heartbeat. Something else is driving it.<\/p>\n<p>Belly contractions move the brain<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/earthsnap.onelink.me\/3u5Q\/ags2loc4\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">&#13;<br \/>\n    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fit-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/earthsnap-banner-news.webp.webp\" alt=\"EarthSnap\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The push comes from the belly. Researchers at Pennsylvania State University (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psu.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">PSU<\/a>) used live imaging in mice to find out when the brain shifted and what triggered the move.<\/p>\n<p>That trigger turned out to be small contractions of the abdominal muscles \u2013 the same tensing your core does before you stand up, sit down, or take a step.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick Drew, Ph.D., professor of engineering science and mechanics at Penn State, led the team. He and his colleagues tracked brain motion of about a micron at a time, tightly coupled to what the abdomen was doing.<\/p>\n<p>Tracking microscopic motion<\/p>\n<p>Two-photon microscopy \u2013 a technique that images living tissue at high resolution \u2013 was used on 24 mice that were head-fixed but free to walk on a treadmill. <\/p>\n<p>The technique makes use of fluorescent beads that are glued to the skull as fixed reference points.<\/p>\n<p>The results showed that, across different animals, the brain shifted roughly a micron forward and to one side. The skull stayed put. Heartbeat and breathing, long thought to drive brain movement in awake animals, barely registered.<\/p>\n<p>Belly muscles lead<\/p>\n<p>To identify the cause, researchers implanted electrodes in the mice\u2019s abdominal muscles. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/useless-ear-muscles-may-actually-serve-a-purpose\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Muscle<\/a> activity spiked before locomotion began, and the brain started shifting as the muscles fired, not when the legs took off.<\/p>\n<p>The same pattern appeared outside locomotion entirely. Deep, forced exhalations under anesthesia recruited the abdominal muscles, and brain movement followed. Light tightening of the core was enough.<\/p>\n<p>Blood vessels provide the connection<\/p>\n<p>How could a contraction in the belly reach an organ inside the head? That question sent the team to look at the spine.<\/p>\n<p>Using high-resolution 3D scans, the team mapped the blood vessels around each vertebra. They found valveless veins \u2013 which allow blood to flow in either direction \u2013 running through the lower vertebrae, linked through small openings to vessels in the abdomen.<\/p>\n<p>That network had been described in humans but was never confirmed in mice. When the abdomen squeezes, blood is likely pushed through those openings into the spinal canal.<\/p>\n<p>The added pressure appears to compress the fluid-filled sleeve around the spinal cord, sending a wave of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/tiny-drainage-tubes-may-flush-toxic-waste-out-of-the-brain\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cerebrospinal<\/a> fluid \u2013 the clear liquid that cushions the brain and spine \u2013 forward into the skull.<\/p>\n<p>A pressure cuff test<\/p>\n<p>The researchers built a small, inflatable belt for lightly anesthetized mice. No walking, no voluntary contractions \u2013 just a gentle external squeeze on the abdomen, less than the squeeze of a blood pressure cuff.<\/p>\n<p>Abdominal pressure alone made the brain move \u2013 forward, slightly sideways, the same direction as during walking. When the belt deflated, the brain returned to its resting position almost immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis suggests that abdominal pressure can rapidly and significantly alter the position of the brain within the skull,\u201d Drew said.<\/p>\n<p>Modeling fluid flow<\/p>\n<p>Imaging fluid moving through brain tissue in real time isn\u2019t yet possible. So the team built a computer model. <\/p>\n<p>Francesco Costanzo, professor of engineering science and mechanics at Penn State, led the simulation work.<\/p>\n<p>The result: the squeeze on the spinal cord drove fluid out of the brain and into the surrounding space several times faster than the brain normally produces its own fluid. Click image to enlarge.Opposite of sleep<\/p>\n<p>That direction was the unexpected part. The brain\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/deep-sleep-clears-toxic-waste-from-the-brain\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">glymphatic<\/a> system \u2013 the waste-clearing pathway activated during sleep \u2013 pulls fluid into the brain along the outside of blood vessels while a person sleeps.<\/p>\n<p>Until this study, no one had identified a mechanical reason why the awake brain might be doing the opposite. Those simulations show fluid flowing outward during waking hours \u2013 the reverse of what an earlier <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3880190\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">study<\/a> on sleep and brain waste clearance described.<\/p>\n<p>That helps explain a long-standing puzzle: tracers injected into the spinal fluid of awake mice don\u2019t enter the cortex, while the same tracers travel freely during sleep. The two states seem to alternate \u2013 sleep for intake, waking for outflow.<\/p>\n<p>Mouse brains are not human brains<\/p>\n<p>All experiments were conducted in head-fixed mice, not humans, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/after-thousands-of-years-scientists-discover-a-new-function-of-yawning\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fluid<\/a> flow findings come from simulation rather than direct imaging. Whether the same mechanism operates in people \u2013 and at what scale \u2013 remains to be tested.<\/p>\n<p>What comes next<\/p>\n<p>The study overturns a basic assumption: the brain is not mechanically isolated from the body. Abdominal contractions nudge it forward within the skull and may sweep waste fluid outward as they do.<\/p>\n<p>That opens a new line of inquiry. Conditions that chronically alter abdominal pressure \u2013 such as obesity, extended bed rest, gastrointestinal disease \u2013 could quietly disrupt fluid clearance over time.
