{"id":587900,"date":"2026-05-16T20:59:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T20:59:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/587900\/"},"modified":"2026-05-16T20:59:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T20:59:14","slug":"the-wild-west-of-wellness-supplements-fuelled-by-the-rise-of-fat-jabs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/587900\/","title":{"rendered":"The \u2018Wild West\u2019 of wellness supplements fuelled by the rise of fat jabs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"63e7cb27-308a-4fd1-95b3-7bbf55cf4f00\">When long-time pals Joely Walker and Holly Brooke attended a friend\u2019s birthday lunch on the King\u2019s Road in west London in 2024, they had no idea they would be inspired to go into business together.\u00a0By the end of the meal, they did.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7290123a-cad6-41a6-8956-3c4918e3950e\">Walker was struck by the discovery as they talked that Brooke was \u201ctaking 30 supplements a day\u201d in \u201ca mixture of teas, capsules and powders\u201d to help regulate her gut.\u00a0She suggested combining the mixture into a formula and \u201ctwo days later [they] were speaking to manufacturers\u201d. This led to the launch of their supplement brand We Are Regular last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"dcd9dcb4-ce92-4ed8-9026-741d13399acf\">Clearly they were onto something. The vitamins, minerals and supplements market in the UK was valued at \u00a31 billion in the year to January 25, according to data from Worldpanel, a firm that analyses consumer behaviour. This figure was an increase of 13 per cent on the previous year \u2014 and it is expected to keep growing. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"   height=\"4361\" width=\"5725\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/f431883f-97de-4438-8c29-7dc790a404cf.jpg\" alt=\"Joely Walker and Holly Brooke seated on brown leather chairs.\" class=\"wp-image-22280169\"\/>Holly Brooke and Joely Walker We Are Regular<\/p>\n<p id=\"1a5309a2-5fb0-4868-a093-cd74b7e7b98b\">Weight-loss drugs such as Wegovy and Mounjaro are fuelling demand and brands such as Vitabiotics, Myprotein and Applied Nutrition are cashing in. But critics warn that the industry is poorly regulated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"29c2e616-276a-4d1c-a5a0-ecd5f4bd4f89\">\u201cThere\u2019s more regulation around pet food than there is around supplements,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/business\/companies-markets\/article\/i-worked-on-big-brother-before-i-danced-to-the-drum-beat-of-shamanism-8p5s2cwf2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kate Prince, founder and chief executive of Ancient + Brave<\/a>, a supplement brand that counts Dame Kelly Holmes and Davina McCall among its fans. \u201cPet food is rigorous, it\u2019s really heavily regulated \u2026 but there is almost nothing around the supplements you put in your body.\u201d <\/p>\n<p id=\"55603c2d-a5a0-494c-86f4-3e00246d86bd\">Advertising complaints are also on the rise: 512 were logged with Britain\u2019s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) last year, up from 380 the year before. As Britain chomps its way through powders, pills and patches, is the industry ripe for a crackdown?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"cebffdea-dab4-4a3e-b1d4-d91f620f519a\">According to Kat Cole, chief executive of supplement brand AG1, much of the sector\u2019s boom is down to the rise of fat jabs. Weight-loss drugs are creating \u201cone of the greatest tailwinds to the industry right now,\u201d she said. \u201cIt stands to reason that most people on a GLP-1 drug are simply eating less; if you are eating less, you have lower access to nutrients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"   height=\"3333\" width=\"5800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/a86ac49f-504c-43bb-8138-bf171e2275de.jpg\" alt=\"Dame Kelly Holmes, in a cream pinstriped suit, smiling while seated on an orange couch.\" class=\"wp-image-22275520\"\/>Dame Kelly Holmes is a fan of Ancient + BraveLUCY YOUNG FOR THE TIMES<\/p>\n<p id=\"cebaea99-5f8b-4b4b-8824-4df272daaf07\">Thomas Ryder, chief executive of London-listed Applied Nutrition, concurred. \u201cConsumers are realising, \u2018OK, I might not be able to get a meal in me, but I might be able to get a protein shake \u2026 I\u2019m going to need some pre- or probiotics.\u2019 And that\u2019s where you\u2019ve got a new cohort of consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"70d361cd-3b00-4367-9cd8-1c91fe9ca6cd\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/politics\/article\/third-of-weight-shed-after-jabs-is-lost-from-muscle-and-bones-fz8k6s6nn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Research published<\/a> on May 13 suggested that about a third of the weight lost by patients on fat jabs came from muscle and bone \u2014 making the need to replenish nutrients via supplements all the more pressing. <\/p>\n<p id=\"c6396f7f-4027-44e4-87b7-29e83a42804b\">Cole said: \u201cIf you\u2019re having one meal instead of four \u2026 that\u2019s a recipe for malnourishment \u2026 You do need supplements more than someone who\u2019s not on a GLP-1.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"ce63d458-5d13-45a4-806a-c29050634cdf\">She added: \u201cIf [people on GLP-1s] are not working out and getting enough protein, creatine and things that work to support the muscles \u2026 [they\u2019re] just skinny, tired and bloated. The number of complaints about supplement adverts received by the Advertising Standards Authority has rocketed in the past few years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"d45100d3-88aa-4762-b1b0-5be9ad6c2b57\">Last year, the ASA made 19 rulings against various supplement makers that promised their products could help with issues as diverse as prostate health, menopause, autism and ADHD.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"3fc69f17-e5e0-44e0-897e-80bdf85f99a7\">\u201cWe are seeing more ads making exaggerated or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/business\/companies-markets\/article\/zoe-health-food-advert-banned-over-misleading-claim-z0zx73j20\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inappropriate health claims<\/a>, particularly online and particularly where they blur the line between warm and fuzzy general wellbeing and more medicinal health-related claims,\u201d said Nicky Baker, regulatory projects manager at the ASA.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"567245a0-82ef-4ec1-8bad-18d4deb08288\">In March, the watchdog upheld complaints over five companies that implied in their advertising that their food supplements could help treat or manage the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/scotland\/article\/watchdog-bans-tiktok-ads-for-menopause-cream-892xshhpz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">symptoms of the menopause<\/a> and pre-menstrual syndrome. They were deemed to have made unauthorised health claims that breached the advertising code of practice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"d3724d1d-f520-4e73-a537-66d62a228915\">\u201cPeople don\u2019t often realise that supplements are legally classed as foods, not medicines, so they can\u2019t be advertised as treating or curing medical conditions,\u201d Baker said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"a15db809-64a3-4494-a5f8-d7bc2a60bbd8\">The regulatory environment can be confusing. Products fall under the remit of the Food Standards Agency (FSA) because supplements are classed as food. However, sometimes local trading standards departments are required to enforce laws, and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) occasionally has to get involved if the products make specific medical claims.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"01a98fd5-6a04-4304-aff6-fc05547d3d6a\">Rebecca Sudworth, director of policy at the FSA, said: \u201cFood supplements must be safe and accurately labelled, wherever they\u2019re sold \u2026 Where unsafe or mislabelled products are found, we expect enforcement action to be taken by local authorities.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"16503474-7165-48f9-9bfb-3e98babb32aa\">But Prince of Ancient + Brave said: \u201cIt\u2019s really the Wild West out there. The only thing we have is that there are certain regulatory amounts of vitamins that you have on your packaging before you can make certain claims. But they may not be a therapeutic amount or a potent amount; they may just be a minimal amount in order for a company to make a claim.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"   height=\"1720\" width=\"2399\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/293d5eb6-3bc6-40d3-be8f-79363b5f8249.jpg\" alt=\"Kate Prince, founder of Ancient + Brave, smiles while sitting in a black leather and wood chair.\" class=\"wp-image-22275526\"\/>Kate PrinceSarah Weal<\/p>\n<p id=\"f30e5d9b-725a-4790-b75a-c99e1dd2e2df\">The picture has been further complicated since Brexit, as Great Britain and the EU operate under different food safety laws. The EU replaced regulations from 2006 with fresh guidance from 2023, which added new controlled substances based on the most recent scientific discoveries. Britain still follows the 2006 guidelines, which were amended in 2013 and are regularly updated.<\/p>\n<p id=\"920d7d65-cf26-4588-931f-ff085ffa8b91\">\u201cWe\u2019re all relying on the ASA to find these people and tell them that their advertising or their packaging, or the claims they\u2019re making, are wrong, inadequate or outright lies,\u201d said Prince. \u201cThere\u2019s nobody policing this or putting money behind it. We need a protocol body to set the standards.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"49a59fe4-cb05-452e-b6f4-3691e5630050\">She cited the example of collagen, which can help make skin and hair look younger. \u201cEveryone will go, \u2018Well, it\u2019s collagen.\u2019 But actually you\u2019ve got to look at the provenance of where it\u2019s coming from.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e4d8ac81-0bcf-4254-83e1-428bed7a61cf\">\u201cA lot of products are labelled fish collagen and that can mean it\u2019s farmed and it\u2019s full of potential hormones and antibiotics, and it also could be coming from parts of Asia and is really unpoliced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"84a39dd4-93ca-43c8-979d-6c74f5e18f1e\">While the regulatory environment is mainly reactive, the barrier to entry into the industry is relatively low. <\/p>\n<p id=\"d61746bd-2855-44dc-8128-022831f8739e\">\u201cIt is easier than it has ever been to launch a company,\u201d said Cole of AG1. \u201cYou use AI, create a brand, get a Shopify account and work with a co-manufacturer who makes a product \u2026 it\u2019s easier than ever for a brand to show up in the world and look pretty legitimate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"8041caec-efe1-4c45-a4a4-c7508d36a603\">Ryder at Applied Nutrition said the sector was \u201ca bit like fast fashion, where things pop up, it creates a bit of a craze, people buy it a lot, they want a lot of it \u2014 and then it falls off\u201d.<\/p>\n<p id=\"22e0758d-dded-4b5f-b828-d02a0ec572d7\">So what\u2019s the solution? AG1, Ancient + Brave and Applied Nutrition have all emphasised that third-party verification sets their products apart.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"d394f6dd-af38-48de-8c59-ebc31b13228a\">Cole said: \u201cYou cannot assume what is on the label is actually in the product unless a third party is measuring it over time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"83fb5c7f-7151-4da5-bf04-61933e11ff31\">The move towards verification would be \u201conerous\u201d for smaller companies, said Prince, because they would have to pay for the testing.
