After four years on the air, The Lincoln Lawyer will be coming to an end with its fifth season. Based on the works of novelist Michael Connelly, the legal drama will have its bow on Netflix.

The acclaimed series, created by Ted Humphrey and David E. Kelley, stars Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Mickey Haller, a robust criminal defence lawyer who represents some of Los Angeles’ trickiest clients.

After 40 episodes across four seasons, the latest of which aired in February, the streamer has confirmed that the next outing will be Mickey’s final story. In the final chapter, he will see his family history brought up amid a new case.

“Mickey’s world is upended when the half-sister he never knew existed, Emi, comes to him with a plea to help free a wrongfully convicted woman,” reads the logline for the fifth season (via Tudum).

“In a season defined by blood ties and buried secrets, Mickey takes on a gruelling habeas petition to overturn a six-year-old murder conviction, but the deeper he digs, the more nefarious the forces arrayed against him become.

“Mickey is now determined to set right an enormous miscarriage of justice. But as he unravels a dangerous web of corruption and lies, he must grapple with the fractured legacy of his family — both his chosen family and the family he never knew he had.”

Garcia-Rulfo will once again be joined by returning faces Becki Newton, Jazz Raycole and Angus Sampson, who reprise their respective roles. Marvel star Cobie Smulders, meanwhile, is a new addition to the cast as Emi.

Following the announcement, showrunners Humphrey and Dailyn Rodriguez shared a statement, which read: “All good things must come to an end, but thankfully sometimes how they come to an end is up to us.”

“From the very beginning, the mission was always not only to tell the story of Mickey Haller and his compatriots, but also to give that story a proper conclusion,” they added, saying the announcement was “bittersweet”.

They did, however, state that the final season provided an “an amazing opportunity to bring this adventure to a close, and perhaps chart a new course for some of our characters into the future”.

Since premiering in 2022, the legal drama has garnered acclaim from critics, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting an approval rating of 92%. The third and fourth seasons have perfect 100% ratings, while the first and second seasons are at 80% and 91%, respectively.
