{"id":588822,"date":"2026-05-17T10:42:16","date_gmt":"2026-05-17T10:42:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/588822\/"},"modified":"2026-05-17T10:42:16","modified_gmt":"2026-05-17T10:42:16","slug":"woman-left-brain-damaged-after-paramedics-delayed-defibrillation-by-pressing-wrong-button","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/588822\/","title":{"rendered":"Woman left brain damaged after paramedics delayed defibrillation by \u2018pressing wrong button\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A woman in cardiac arrest was left brain damaged after being starved of oxygen when paramedics delayed defibrillation by pressing \u201cthe wrong button\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Meg Fozzard now has speech difficulties, struggles with fatigue and requires a wheelchair after ambulance crews delayed administering a life-saving electric shock by eight minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The 33-year-old collapsed at her home in Walworth, south <a class=\"ck-custom-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/london\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">London<\/a>, struggling to breathe and fitting as she went into cardiac arrest in April 2019.<\/p>\n<p>When paramedics arrived, after a delay in finding the flat, they did not believe Ms Fozzard had a heart problem, despite warnings from the emergency call handler minutes earlier.<\/p>\n<p>They initially failed to switch the specialist defibrillator into automatic analysis mode, which determines whether a shock is needed.<\/p>\n<p>The crew then pressed the wrong button on the machine, known as a LifePak, delaying its evaluation for another four minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Breach in duty of care<\/p>\n<p>Ms Fozzard, a TV producer, has received an undisclosed settlement from London Ambulance Service <a class=\"ck-custom-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/nhs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NHS<\/a> Trust which has admitted <a class=\"ck-custom-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2025\/10\/17\/nhs-owes-60bn-in-medical-negligence-claims-legal-fees-uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">breaches in its duty of care<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cIt\u2019s almost impossible to find the words to describe the physical and emotional impact of trying to come to terms with what happened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore my injury, I\u2019d hop on a train or even fly across the world and visit friends but that all changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d gone from being independent to being reliant on others. I even struggled to tell people what I needed because of my speech.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her cardiac arrest happened as a result of an undiagnosed, underlying heart condition.
