support, was awarded the highest possible rating following a comprehensive inspection.

The CQC evaluated the service across five key areas: whether it is safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led.

Iain Cameron, chief executive of St Michael’s Hospice, said: “We are absolutely delighted that St Michael’s Hospice has been rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission.

“This is an incredible achievement and a true reflection of the compassion, professionalism and commitment shown every day by our staff and volunteers.”

The inspection report highlighted the hospice’s homely environment, noting that patients and families felt safe, informed, and supported by a team that prioritises dignity and kindness.

Mr Cameron said: “Hospice care is about supporting people and families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives, and I am immensely proud that the quality of care delivered within our hospice has been recognised at the very highest level.”

He also thanked the wider hospice community for contributing to the recognition.

Mr Cameron said: “This achievement belongs to every member of the hospice team — from our clinical staff and support services to our fundraisers, retail teams, volunteers and the wider community whose ongoing support makes our work possible.

“Most importantly, this rating provides reassurance to our community that outstanding specialist palliative and end-of-life care is available locally, delivered with dignity, compassion and excellence.”

St Michael’s Hospice supports people across North Hampshire who are affected by life-limiting illnesses, helping them to live as fully and comfortably as possible.

Services include inpatient and home-based care, outpatient clinics, therapeutic services, complementary therapies, and medical consultations.

The hospice also offers extensive support to families and carers.

All services are provided free of charge.

Operating costs for the hospice run to £7.4 million per year, of which only 22 per cent is funded by the government.

As a result, the hospice must raise £15,000 every day to maintain its services through fundraising and community support.

The full inspection report is available on the CQC website.

St Michael’s Hospice is a UK registered charity and relies heavily on donations and fundraising events to continue offering care at no cost to patients and their families.

The outstanding rating offers reassurance to the community that specialist palliative care is available locally, delivered according to the highest standards.

St Michael’s Hospice in Basingstoke, which provides free palliative, end-of-life, and bereavement support, was awarded the highest
