James Cameron<\/a>\u00a0has said he wants to make the next two\u00a0Avatar\u00a0films \u201cin half the time for two thirds of the cost\u201d.<\/p>\n

The director\u00a0made movie history with 2009\u2019s\u00a0Avatar<\/a>, set on an alien world where indigenous beings, The Na\u2019vi, rise up against the humans invading their land for resources. The film remains the highest grossing movie of all time at over $2.9billion (\u00a32.1billion), while 2022 sequel Avatar: The Way Of Water<\/a>\u00a0sits at third with\u00a0$2.3billion\u00a0(\u00a31.7billion).<\/p>\n

Last year\u2019s\u00a0Avatar: Fire\u00a0And\u00a0Ash<\/a>\u00a0was\u00a0less wildly\u00a0successful, but still performed well<\/a>, grossing approximately\u00a0$1.49billion\u00a0(\u00a31.1billion).<\/p>\n

Cameron has always\u00a0indicated\u00a0that he plans to make a total of five\u00a0Avatar\u00a0films, but there have been doubts that\u00a0the final two instalments would go ahead, given the declining box office receipts.<\/p>\n

In a new interview on\u00a0The Empire Film Podcast, in which he was promoting his new\u00a0Billie Eilish<\/a>\u00a0tour documentary\u00a0Hit Me Hard And Soft: The Tour (Live In 3D)<\/a>,\u00a0he said the final two films were \u201cstill floating out there\u201d, but he indicated that if they are to come to fruition, he might need to change his procedure.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re\u00a0gonna\u00a0be looking at some new technologies to try and do them more efficiently, because they\u2019re hideously expensive and take a long time,\u201d he said. \u201cI want to do them in half the time for two thirds of the cost,\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0my metric. And\u00a0so,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0going to take us a year or so to figure out how to do that. And in the meantime,\u00a0I\u2019ll\u00a0be writing\u00a0and\u00a0probably be\u00a0doing a couple of other things.\u201d<\/p>\n

In December,\u00a0Cameron said that if the films do not end up being made, he will hold a press conference to reveal what\u00a0the plots would have been<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cI don\u2019t know if the saga goes beyond this point. I hope it does,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0a three-star review of\u00a0Fire And Ash<\/a>,\u00a0NME wrote: \u201cBut, to return to the theme-park analogy, the queues are ultimately worth it for the rides you get. From a stunning early skirmish involving airships, to a huge climactic showdown that is no less thrilling for taking place in the same location and involving largely the same participants as\u00a0The Way Of Water\u2019s final battle.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCameron orchestrates these set-pieces to a next-level standard. The clarity, dynamism and sheer scale of the action is near enough unparalleled, and it\u2019s hard to argue you don\u2019t get your money\u2019s worth. Still, Cameron is going to have to think outside the (Pandora\u2019s) box and change the game for any future instalments.\u201d<\/p>\n
